Jake Gyllenhaal is stepping into the ring to deliver some major punishment, the upcoming boxing drama "Southpaw" looks to be one for the ages and other interesting role portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal. Sports films have been teetering on the edge of success lately but Southpaw could help raise the bar if it is received well at the box office. Southpaw will have to compete with "Creed" which already has Slyvester Stallone as a major box office magnet. Many hope that this film will be just as memorable as "Warrior" which was somewhat panned by critics and praised by fans who have labeled it an "underrated masterpiece".

here's the plot synopsis:

Billy "The Great" Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal), the reigning light heavyweight boxing champion, has an impressive career, a loving wife and daughter, and a lavish lifestyle. However, when tragedy strikes, Billy hits rock bottom, losing his family, his house and his manager. He soon finds an unlikely savior in Tick Willis (Forest Whitaker), a former fighter who trains the city's toughest amateur boxers. With his future on the line, Hope fights to reclaim the trust of those he loves the most.

This movie seems like your run of the mill story where there's a hard-hitting fighter who excels at the sport but has problems maintaining the success he has built up over time because his home life is a mess or he is a bit impulsive and has lost sight of what is important. If this film can transcend some of the tropes that it will be assigned then it might be worth the time. These films have often had a formulaic approach when it comes to character development and the introduction of external and internal conflicts but it will be interesting to see how this film deals with those conflicts. You probably already have enough motivation to see this film, it's hard to turn down a movie that boasts a colorful ensemble featuring Rachel Mcadams,Forest whitaker, and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Eminem was originally supposed to play the title character of Billy Hope but he dropped out of the project and helped develop the soundtrack instead, We can only imagine what he could have brought to the table if he had gone through with the movie. Gyllenhaal is still expected to perform well despite the wave of disappointment that washed over fans when they learned who originally occupied the role. Rachel Mcadams might give another Heartfelt performance as a battered wife who feels alienated from her husband but still tries to connect with him or she will simply be overshadowed by other performances. Southpaw has the potential to be a knockout at the box office as long it exceeds expectations and is able to go a few rounds in the ring with slightly more anticipated films.

Southpaw arrives in theaters on July 24, 2015
