When someone asks you who Batman's alter ego is...you say Bruce Wayne. That's what we think of. The dashingly good looking, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist. We were taught that Bruce Wayne was Batman...no one else.

Batman as you know him
Batman as you know him

The truth is that Bruce Wayne may be the original Batman, and the one featured most recently in The Dark Knight Rises, but he hasn't always been the only one to take up the mask as the caped crusader. So sit back and relax, because I am about to change the way you think (possibly...maybe...probably not) about just who Batman really is.

1. Azrael

Azrael as the Caped Crusader
Azrael as the Caped Crusader

This version of Batman, sees Jean Paul-Valley take up the cape after Bane breaks Batman's (Bruce Wayne) back in 1993's Knightfall story line. This identity goes through multiple people, including Michael Washington Lane (apparently you have to have 3 names to be Azrael) after Jean Paul-Valley's death.

2. Dick Grayson

Dick (I mean Richard) Grayson is one of the most known characters on this list. He is most known for being one of the many Robins, and the one and only Nightwing. But a little known fact is that he was also Batman for a short time after Bruce Wayne's apparent death. But after it was revealed that Bruce Wayne was still alive, he went back to being Nightwing.

3. Black Mask

Black Mask masquerading as Batman
Black Mask masquerading as Batman

The only villain on this list to take up Batman's mantel, the Black Mask, began a campaign to discredit Batman during the War Crimes. Black Mask's real name is Roman Sionis, and with the help of reporter Arturo Rodriguez, committed a series of murders dressed up in a Batman costume.

4. Jason Todd

Jason Todd aka Robin
Jason Todd aka Robin

Another Robin on this list, Todd dressed as the caped crusader, and began going around and killing criminals. After killing his criminals, he would pin a note to their bodies saying that he was the one and only true Batman. During his crusade as Batman, he even built his own Batcave to torture and kill criminals.

5. Tim Drake

Tim Drake did Batman once too

ANOTHER ROBIN...(I know what you guys are thinking, there are enough birds in this article to make my own field guide...I am so sorry, that was a terrible joke). Tim Drake is depicted as the future Batman on several occasions. And he even had his own version of a Batman costume in Battle for the Cowl.

6. Damian Wayne

Do. Not. Mess.
Do. Not. Mess.

AAAAANNNNNOOOOOTTTTTHHHHHEEEEERRRRR RRRRROOOOOBBBBBIIIIINNNNN!!!!! Damian Wayne is the son of Bruce Wayne and Talia Al'Ghul. And just like Drake, he is shown as being one of the future Batmans, and mentions Bruce and Dick as the previous holders of the title. He even named his cat Alfred.

7. Terry McGinnis

Not exactly Bruce Wayne
Not exactly Bruce Wayne

Terry is shown as the successor of Batman in Batman #700. Damian Wayne became the mentor of Terry, after saving him from Two-Face-Two when Terry was an infant. And stayed Batman for quite a while.
