Robert Downey Jr. is a huge Marvel fan favorite and one of the highest earning actors in Hollywood, but even those who follow his career closely might be surprised to hear just how big the star's pay packet was for Avengers: Age of Ultron.

The 50-year-old actor would need to lock himself into Iron Man's mighty suit to lift all of his wages in one go, because Google assures me they would weigh a staggering 816 pounds even if they were doled out in $100 bills.

The cost of retaining the only man anyone can imagine as Tony Stark these days for [The Avengers: Age Of Ultron](tag:293035) and the upcoming [Captain America: Civil War](tag:994409) was a staggering $80 million meaning that the star was probably paid a cool $40 million for each movie.

Me too, RDJ. Me too.
Me too, RDJ. Me too.

While this figure alone is pretty staggering, the thing that really hammers RDJ's popularity home is the fact that he was paid a significant amount more than all of the other Avengers put together.

According to Hollywood Reporter, the cost of hiring the main cast for AOU (including Samuel L. Jackson) was around $23 million, not including bonuses. So, enough to pay off just over one half of an RDJ (although bonuses were reportedly calculated in his cheque).

Investing such a huge amount of capital in Downey Jr.'s star power will inevitably pay off for Mavel though as Civil War is expected to gross at least $1 billion in the box office with a lot of that down to RDJ's magnetic charisma.

It might seem like a hefty fee, but I know for certain that every Avengers fan I know wouldn't go and see a movie if Tony Stark was replaced, so in the end it will be worth every penny.
