How excited are you for Deadpool to storm into cinemas next year? We're pretty much out of our minds. The casting is perfect, the script will be great, and with an official R Rating we'll be getting the best of the Merc with the Mouth. After Wade Wilson's shocking portrayal in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the antihero deserves the best big screen treatment he can get.
So far, the outlook is very good: Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are penning a script that has reportedly also had input from Ryan Reynolds himself. With sidekicks and enemies galore, our favourite fourth-wall breaking vigilante will have plenty to do come February. So what do we know so far? There have been numerous leaks and hints and releases, and if you haven't been keeping up with them, never fear! Just sit back, relax, and bask in the Deadpool hype.
The official synopsis is out, and it is great.
"Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life."
So we're definitely seeing the real origins of Wade Wilson's alter ego, revealing how he got his abilities and why he's on a vengeance mission. Whether he will be suffering from cancer, as in the comics, remains to be seen. But it's not too much of a jump to assume that the reason Wade agreed to take part in a dangerous experiment in the first place was to try and cure his disease.
The film definitely won't shy away from these darker topics: with an official R Rating this has freed the writers up to adopt an irreverent, blackly comic style.
Rob Liefeld, long time comic artists and co-creator of the Deadpool character, had this to say after glancing at the shooting script. Which is fantastic! Could we see an all-out sword fight a la Kill Bill, complete with multiple dismemberments as Wade goes up against countless foes? Well, he's already got the Katanas...
Apart from Bea and Arthur, who can we expect Deadpool to team up with? With a star studded cast list, and new mutants ready to be revealed, Wade Wilson's gonna have a lot on his plate.
Negasonic Teenage Warhead
The latest promo pictures to be released have revealed that Wade may get his very own sidekick! Meet Negasonic Teenage Warhead, the pint sized mutant who'll kill you as soon as look at you.
In the comics, Ellie Phimister trained under Emma Frost to hone her telepathy and precognition, and even joined the Hellfire Club for a while. This would be a nice way to tie the Deadpool movie to the X-Men franchise, but with the Hellfire Club disbanded back in the 60s and Emma Frost's fate unknown, we might not get Ellie's badass comic backstory. What we will get, for sure, is glorious grumpy banter flying back and forth between these two. The mean faced teen is the perfect foil for Wade's hyper yet dangerous persona, and we can't wait to see these two team up with... wait, who?
A Colossal Pain in the Ass
That's right! Colossus is officially confirmed to appear. The hero has already appeared in four of the X-Men movies, most recently as one of the final survivors in the future of [X-Men: Days Of Future Past](tag:203942). The role he'll play in the Deadpool movie has not yet been confirmed, and the character has been recast, and will now be played by Andre Tricoteux.
Could Colossus have been sent by Xavier to take out Wade? Or will the X-Men team be ignored by the Deadpool movie? Producer Simon Kinberg confirmed that Wade's story will indeed be included in the larger universe.
"They do all feed into one another in the sense of wanting to tell this sort of massive story that can take place over multiple movies."
Which is pretty exciting: seeing Deadpool team up with the X-Men in future movies would be fantastic, although Wolverine would have some origins-related explaining to do...
Breaking the fourth wall
Actually, this might be a great opportunity for one of Deadpool's most iconic personality traits to shine. Wade Wilson is, well, pretty unhinged. We're not sure of the psychological diagnosis (if there is one), but it's a well known fact that Wade's mind and this universe are only just about on speaking terms. In the comics he frequently breaks the fourth wall to comment on what's going on. Sometimes he even argues with the writer...
Addressing the other Wade Wilson in X-Men Origins: Wolverine would be the perfect opportunity to showcase this humour. And our hopes are not in vain: the 2010 leaked draft of the Deadpool script featured an action figure of the other Wade. Of course, this was an early version of the script and has no doubt been changed, so this might not be exactly how the inconsistency is commented on. But we can expect plenty of tongue-in-cheek jokes and fourth wall breaks in the final version!
There are plenty of other characters confirmed to appear, including mutants Angel Dust (Gina Carano) and Copycat (Morena Baccarin), and Deadpool's best frenemy-turned-ally Weasel (TJ Miller). This is shaping up to be a great movie, with confirmed team ups and showdowns and tantalising script leaks that promise Wade Wilson's definitely getting the star treatment. The only thing left to do is wait, and try and contain our excitement!
