There are quite a few actors that get credit for being the perfect chameleons. Gary Oldman and Meryl Streep are just two examples of actors who can play roles so well, you won't even recognize them until you see their names in the end credits. So today, dear Moviepilot readers, I propose we add another name to this list of actors who have seemingly sold their souls to the Many-Faced God: Vincent D'Onofrio.
You may think you know Vincent D'Onofrio for his incredible portrayal as Wilson Fisk in Marvel's [Daredevil (Netflix)](tag:1168702) series, but there's a very good chance you've seen him before without even realizing it. Now granted, some of our older readers will mostly likely know a lot of these appearances, but to those of you who were introduced to him though Daredevil, I know at least one of these will make you say "oh my God." Today, let's take a look at eight movies where you won't believe you've seen the man behind Wilson Fisk before:
8. Mystic Pizza
- Year: 1988
- Also Stars: Julia Roberts
Bill Montijo is just your regular, lovable fisherman who only wanted to get married. He was sweet and was likely to make you really like his character at certain points throughout the film. Not to mention he had a few 'performance' issues when a statue of Jesus was in the room with him.
7. The Whole Wide World
- Year: 1996
- Also Stars: Renée Zellweger
Vincent D'Onofrio plays the film version of famous pulp fiction writer, Robert E. Howard. This story revolves around his romantic relationship with schoolteacher Novalyne Price and the struggle to maintain it while coping with Howard's dedication to his work and his terminally sick mother.
Fun Fact: Robert E. Howard is the creator of the Conan the Barbarian series of books.
6. Jurassic World
- Year: 2015
- Also Stars: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard
Meet Hoskins, an army man that happens to be on InGen's payroll. Hoskins is loud and confident, but that doesn't necessarily translate into the skills needed to handle a dinosaur outbreak in Jurassic World. This was my "IS THAT KINGPIN?" moment when I saw the movie and thought the actor looked a little familiar.
5. Ed Wood
- Year: 1994
- Also Stars: Johnny Depp, Sarah Jessica Parker, Bill Murray, Martin Landau
Vincent D'Onofrio portrays Orson Welles in one of Tim Burton's best movies to date: Ed Wood. D'Onofrio nailed the character and mannerisms of this legendary actor. His role in the film may have been small, but it was all that was needed to give Ed Wood the motivation he needed!
4. Full Metal Jacket
- Year: 1987
- Also Stars: Matthew Modine, Adam Baldwin
Say hello to Private Gomer Pyle, an overweight, and clumsy Marine recruit in Full Metal Jacket. For this role, Stanley Kubrick required D'Onofrio to gain weight and he added 70 pounds (32 kg). This would go on to be recorded as the most weight an actor had ever gained for a role, beating out Robert De Niro's weight gain for Raging Bull.
3. Adventures in Babysitting
- Year: 1987
- Also Stars: Elisabeth Shue
In Adventures in Babysitting, Vincent D'Onofrio is Dawson, the owner of Dawson's Garage. His role in the movie is a small one, but it's notable for being his first appearance since losing all the weight he gained for Full Metal Jacket. To make this appearance a bit cooler, one of the characters in this movie even likened Dawson's character to Marvel's Thor and even gave him the iconic silver-winged helmet!
2. The Cell
- Year: 2000
- Also Stars: Jennifer Lopez, Vince Vaughn, Dylan Baker
Man, talk about twisted. D'Onofrio portrayed serial killer Carl Stargher in Traem Singh's insanely weird horror movie: The Cell. Add in an Inception-like device that allowed Jennifer Lopez to enter the dreams of this killer in order to find any surviving victims, and you've got yourself the movie equivalent of LSD.
1. Men in Black
- Year: 1997
- Also Stars: Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Tony Shalhoub
What?! That was D'Onofrio?! When I read this credit on his his IMDB page, I went to the fridge to drink a glass of water just so that I could spit it out in shock and disbelief! Edgar from Men in Black is such an iconic character from my childhood that I still can't hear the words "sugar water" without thinking about him. Sure, the other two MIB movies had fancier villains, but Edgar will always be my favorite in the franchise.
Vincent D'Onofrio is currently filming two pretty large scale movies as well. His next big appearance will be in 2016 in James Franco's In Dubious Battle alongside an all-star cast including: Bryan Cranston, Josh Hutcherson, Selena Gomez and Danny McBride.
In 2017, Vincent D'Onofrio will hit the silver screen again in The Maginificent Seven, with another amazing cast including: Chris Pratt, Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke.
