Let's get this out of the way - I am a MASSIVE advocate for boycotting FIFA 16 following the appalling FIFA revelations from earlier this year. After hearing this enormous company was involved in sexist acts, extreme corruption, slavery, neglect of public health, and actual deaths, I couldn't bring myself to give them a cent of my money - even if it is for a video game made by EA. EA pay a lot of money to have FIFA's brand on this franchise and I sure as hell won't be lining the pockets of these bigots.
However, this being said, picking PES 2016 over FIFA 16 this year comes with a solitary downside: women's football. EA finally responded to the request from fans around the world by addressing the lack of female teams in their games. There have naturally been some ridiculous comments from a small group of FIFA gamers/imbeciles asking why EA even bothered. But we don't care about these people.
FIFA 16 - Women's Football is Making This Choice More Difficult
I can't wait to play the next step in Football on XBOX One, Xbox 360, PS4, PS3 and PC. And after I'd heard about the FIFA scandals, I was excited to give PES 2016 a try and finally realise the differences between the two games. But it was a bit disheartening to see women's football arrive only in FIFA 16. After watching the world cup these past few weeks, it's insanely cool that these women are finally being acknowledged for their contribution to the sport by EA. It's a small step, but an awesome one at that.
It is such an honor for women’s players and our team to be included in FIFA 16. I always wondered what it would be like to see our team in the game and it is very cool to know that it is now a reality.
- Alex Morgan, forward for the United States women's national soccer team
It's a bit of a pity that the manner in which women footballers have been put into the game is a bit limited. There are only 12 teams in the game and they can only compete against one another. Women's teams will have their own online tournaments and such and it would be nice if we could use them against male teams, at least in friendly local matches. One small step at a time I suppose.
