WARNING: Possible spoilers for The Walking Dead comic and TV series ahead.
Scott Gimple has revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly what exactly fans can expect Season 6 of The Walking Dead to be about, and from the hints he's dropped, it should make it an especially interesting season for fans of the comic series!
Despite Season 6 not premiering until October, the hype for the new season has begun, especially in the lead up to San Diego Comic-Con which is where the trailer for Season 6 will premier on July 10th.
When asked by EW what hints Scott Gimple could give fans about Season 6, he responded:
"I’ll say this: I think there’s a really cool aspect to the first half of the season that serves almost as a prequel to some direct comic stuff in the second half of the season. I think there’s a way that Robert did some of the story that we’re reaching that had a real past to it, where people are referring to some things in the past in the comic. And we’re able to portray some of that backstory in some ways that you didn’t get to see in the comic."
After following the comic material very closely over the course of Season 5, I think it'll be awesome to see the show explores plots outside of what we see depicted in the comic series - especially if it's stuff that was referenced in the comics, but never shown.
So what exactly is this 'prequel' material that we should be expecting to see in the first half of Season 6? Well, it's definitely too early to be thinking of Negan or anything involved with All Out War, but perhaps it has something to do with the big bads we've only just been introduced to - the Wolves.
In the comic series there aren't any bad guys known as 'the Wolves,' though there are a number of smaller groups who are threats, including one dubbed the Scavengers. Given that The Walking Dead usually works in three-episode story arcs I think it's entirely possible that we'll see a lot of backstory from the Wolves leading up the ultimate showdown between them and Alexandria. How did the Wolves group start? Who is their leader? How many of them are there? I expect we'll find out all of this and more early on in Season 6.
However, there's another character who we also have a lot to learn about: Morgan. The season finale saw Morgan finally arrive at Alexandria, but he's obviously a very changed man from the empty shell we last saw in Season 3. Hopefully we have a few episodes where we learn just where Morgan picked up his new "all life is precious" mantra, and also where he learned his bad-ass staff fighting skills.
Whatever Season 6 will cover, we will see a small snippet of what's to come when The Walking Dead comic-con trailer premiers on July 10th in San Diego.
