5. My Neighbor Totoro (1988)

One of my favorite films from Studio Ghibli, I found it to be adorable. The story will make you hug the people you love.

4. Fist of the Northstar (1986)

This sci-fi martial arts epic is has glorified gore, which includes exploding heads and has a brutality record in the action department. When it first came out, there were mixed reviews and it's been put in the "so bad it's good" category.

3. Transformers The Movie (1986)

This might not fully count as an anime film, but it's on my list anyway. I barely remember watching the TV series as a little girl, but this movie is an 80’s animated classic. It’s infamous for killing a prominent character. It’s a wonderful film and it’s must see for any Transformer fan.

2. Graves of the Fireflies (1988)

Beautifully and painfully stunning. Based on real events, this film will grab your emotions. I rarely cry when I watch anything and this film made me cry.

1. Akira (1988)

This is an epic film and it’s one of the first anime films that anime lovers in the 80’s saw. The cyberpunk skyline of Tokyo, the big psychic blob at the end of the film, it’s a must see. Over the years, this film has inspired many filmmakers, musicians, and artists and fans.

And that's my list. What are your top five anime films of the 80s? Leave a comment below and check out my top five favorite anime films of the 90s here and let me know what you think! Until next time.
