Deadline is reporting that Ben Affleck, star of the upcoming Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, will direct and co-write the upcoming Batman solo film for Warner Bros.
DC's Comic Con panel takes place later this weekend and we're surely to be flooded with news about the upcoming slate then but this is some pretty big news. We've heard that this may be happening for a while now.
Ben Affleck's next directing job will be Live By Night which will start shooting this November. He postponed doing Live By Night due to being cast in Batman V Superman.
Ben Affleck will work with DC Comics' chief creative officer Geoff Johns who has written for both comics and TV. Sources have told Deadline that the two will write the script together. Affleck's previous writing credits include Gone Baby Gone, The Town and Good Will Hunting.
This new stand alone Batman film will presumably be the fourth time we'll see Ben Affleck's Batman on the big screen after Batman V Superman, Suicide Squad and Justice League Part 1 which comes out November 2017. As of yet the stand alone Batman film does not have a release date much like the Man Of Steel sequel, but rumors have floated around that it will be titled The Batman.
Ben Affleck has become one of the most respected Hollywood directors in recent years after having three consecutive films to be critically acclaimed; Gone Baby Gone, The Town and Argo for which he won Best Picture.
I think Affleck can bring the right amount of intensity and depth to a stand alone Batman film, he obviously understands the character as he's such a big fan and now he's played him. All three of Affleck's films are great, just go and watch The Town if you have any doubt about this news. It's presumed that directing a Batman film for Warner Bros. was included in his contract when he signed on for the role.
This has yet to be confirmed, and it may be so over this Comic Con weekend. Stay tuned for updates.
