A couple of months ago, I posted an article on Black Widow's Red Room training and how I want (me and everybody else) a Black Widow movie. I wanted to take another crack at it.

Let's take another look at the Black Widow file, shall we?

Bucky Barnes' file, actually
Bucky Barnes' file, actually

Our current time period of The Avengers and Daredevils show that a former Soviet Spy, Natasha Romanoff, is working for SHIELD and the Avengers. She had a set of lethal skills and began to work for the good guys as Black Widow. In [The Avengers: Age Of Ultron](tag:293035), she said she was trained/raised in an Academy in the USSR called The Red Room.

We saw that [Marvel's Agent Carter](tag:1119765) had an episode that featured The Red Room and even had its own WWII-era Black Widow working in America against Agent Carter and the SSR. That woman was Dottie Underwood (her American alias) and she's pretty much crazy and lethal. The new Agent Carter Declassified book had this little piece of music from the series:

Comrades
Comrades

We will break them/We will build them/The Red Storm Rises/It is useless to resist/ Control their minds/Change their hearts/All will join us/Or perish in defeat/The Red Room grows/Spreads fear like a plague/The power and the glory/In victory will be ours.

Woah. Brings to mind this guy:

Not too far off though...the Soviets trained Drago to become the ultimate Proletariat athlete through any means necessary. Ol' Ivan here was probably sent to Siberia (or shot) when he didn't beat Rocky. I think that piece of music is pretty significant to Agent Carter's Dottie storyline and could even work for a future Red Room movie.

This academy takes young Soviet girls, breaks them, and turns them into weapons against their enemies. World Domination is their goal. This also sounds like another Joss Whedon character:

I can kill you with my brain
I can kill you with my brain

Knowing what we know about Soviet Russia, it was probably a great honor for the State to take a family's daughters and use them as tools against Capitalist enemies. Natasha Romanoff is a descendant of the Romanoffs who ruled Russia as Tsars. Quite a coup for the communists, eh?

This is what we think of when we think about the Red Room in the Marvel Cinematic Universe:

And up
And up

Ballet and fighting. Shooting guns and killing friends. From the time of Dottie Underwood to Natasha Romanoff, their fighting style remains the same.

In the comics, the Winter Soldier even helped trained them.

Who the hell is bucky?

Imagine a young Scarlett Johansson doing all that?

Young Scar Jo

We also learn that upon graduation from the Red Room, the Black Widows are sterilized, unable to have babies. We learned this in Age of Ultron, after we saw Dottie look wistfully at baby carriages and use it as a weapon in the second-to-last episode of Agent Carter Season One.

oh baby
oh baby

The actress who played Dottie, Bridget Regan, said she based the naive Dottie persona on Snow White, always willing to serve in that WWII/Stepford Wives kind of way. As Peggy Carter often does, she is pretending to be a less dangerous woman. Reagan was also familiar with the period since she used to teach 1940's swing dancing.

whistle while you work

One more crazy thing that I noticed about Black Widow: She can use your own weapons against you. Think they taught that in the Red Room, too?

Iron Man 2
Iron Man 2
Hulk smash for widow!
Hulk smash for widow!
Goddess of Thunder

Could that be significant?

Fan Speculation: what if Dottie is really Yelena Belova? She's another Black Widow from the comics. She really hates Natasha and wears impractical leather outfits. I can't wait to see her in Season 2 in Hollywoodland!

sick burn

All this speculation brings up a question in spycraft: where did Natasha Romanoff go after the events of Winter Soldier but before Age of Ultron? It's not like she can remain anonymous and work up more fake identities...the Avengers are known world-wide. Which has to be uncomfortable to a former spy who's worked in the shadows literally all of her life....

What do you think? Black Widows yea or nay?
