Actor Roger Rees has died at his home in New York City following a battle with stomach cancer. He was 71 years old.

The Welsh-born actor was known for his on-screen appearances in the TV shows Cheers, The West Wing and My So-Called Life and films such as The Prestige and Robin Hood: Men in Tights.

Aside from acting in front of the camera, Rees was also a decorated stage actor having won Olivier and Tony Awards for his lead role in the play The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. Rees also received Obie Awards for his role in The End of the Day and as a co-director of Peter and the Starcatcher.

Rees, who became a naturalized United States citizen in 1989, is survived by his husband Rick Elice.
