When the first Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer dropped many of us, including me, broke down every frame analyzing what each one meant in terms of plot points. However, while many could be easily explained, one frame eluded any comic book reference that made sense within the story arc; The soldiers wearing the superman emblem. When the first teaser dropped, I assumed it was a dream sequence in which Superman or others would experience what the world would be like if Superman had lost control. However, with the second trailer dropping at Comic-Con today, I don't know what or who these soldiers are. That is why I am going to do my best to break down just who these soldiers are.

Now why did this new trailer dispose of my previous theory that this was a dream sequence? That is because of Batman obviously fighting the soldiers in a desert-like base (my assumption is that it is in Mexico)

From this image it looks like Batman tried infiltrating the base, which in a dream sequence would not make much sense if it was Superman dreaming it. These soldiers may be radicals adopting Superman's image as a sort of Christ-like guiding figure to worship and use to inform their own brand of justice but they have to much of a screen presence to be that simple.

If I had to guess one actor whose role has not been identified yet who could be the leader of this group would be Callan Mulvey.

These soldiers look like their being attacked by a force, not just Batman (although he is a force). These soldiers most resemble in the comic book community that within the Injustice comic where they served as Superman's peace-keeping force across the world, however, with that Superman being of a alternate more sinister Earth, it is unlikely ours has any connection to this cult of lovers. How do these terrorists fit into the plot of Batman v Superman though?

The picture above looks to be taken straight out of an old western, however if you look close enough they appear to be wearing the large coats similar to the ones of the soldiers who are also in a desert. My best guess is that these soldiers belong to a Lex Luthor owned private military protection service. But, why are they wearing Superman's emblem? To shame him. These soldiers were ordered by Lex Luthor to wear Superman's emblem and attempt to commit terrorist acts in the name of Superman to ruin his already damaged reputation forcing him to leave Earth.

At first I thought, damn you thought they would have learned by know. But, I took a closer look and this appears to be outside of Gotham or Metropolis (although they were confirmed to only be across the bay from one another) and it appears the damage is in a well torn down area. This damage appears not to have been caused by a battle between Batman and Superman (as i doubt it would cause that much damage) but a coordinated attack on specific parts of the area. That is where these soldiers come in play. They could commit some horrible act in the name of Superman that Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman all get in a huge fight that was orchestrated by Lex Luthor.

And throughout the whole trailer we see Lexcorp and Luthor surrounded by military forces that are not bearing any USA logo so they are likely a private firm.

Poll

Do you think Luthor is using his own private military resources to shame the name of Superman through terrorists spreading the ideals of Superman.
