Now, when the news first broke that Jon Bernthal would be taking the role of The Punisher in the upcoming second season of Marvel and Netflix's Daredevil, the response was...actually pretty darned positive. After all, not only is Bernthal a capable and popular actor, he's also made a name for himself in the likes of The Walking Dead and Fury playing dark, emotionally-complex characters - which makes him pretty much a natural to play the distinctly anti-heroic Frank Castle.
The only question for some fans? Whether or not Bernthal would look the part - which, as it turns out, is a question we may well now have an answer to. Y'see:
We Have Our First Look at Bernthal on the Daredevil Set
And as it turns out - in a whole bunch high definition images posted recently by Just Jared - Bernthal sure can pull off the look of a gruff, ex-military vigilante with a psychopathic streak a mile wide:
Which is distinctly good news for anyone who's ever loved The Punisher - especially since a solid performance by Bernthal could well score the character his own spin-off series..:
The only major discrepancy from the comics, then?
Well, aside from the understandable absence of the iconic Skull chestplate (who wants to bet we'll see it turn up near the end of the season, much like with Daredevil's costume in season one?), there's one notable change:
This New Punisher Has a Whole New Haircut
One which, as it turns out, is a heck of a lot shorter than the comic-book Castle's 'cut ever used to be:
For a modern-day version of the character, though - one who's likely to have a whole lot more in common with Bradley Cooper's American Sniper role as Iraq War vet Chris Kyle than with the character's comic-book origins as a Vietnam combatant - it actually makes a whole lot of sense.
And, more to the point, if Bernthal can manage to bring The Punisher to life with as much success as everyone's hoping, no-one's likely to give to much of a damn...
What do you reckon, though?
