Heads up for light to major spoilers from Phase One and Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
Since 2008, we have been blessed with how Marvel has reintroduced their world through the silver screen.
Since then, we’ve grown up, in a way, with the franchise, watching it develop into a colossal force that’s seen many of its films reach the dizzy heights of one of the highest grossing films ever.
It’s also produced some memorable one-liners and scenes, with the addition of some geek love towards a certain villain – you know who I mean, but I'll keep it Loki...
But which of the scenes from the ENTIRE Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) could go down as the greatest or unforgettable?
So, in no particular order…
Iron Man dons the suit
It’s not so much a scene to start off with, more like a montage of best bits and it comes from the first time we get to see Tony Stark in his suit.
It was something that every comic book fan longed to see. Of course pictures can tell a thousand words, as the old saying goes, but to see it in full flight, firing weapons and, who can forget the ‘inside of the helmet’ shot, where not only do we get to see Stark interact with JARVIS, but also other aspects such as targeting, voice calling and other diagnostics – all very hi-tech!
The Avengers Assemble
From the first film in Phase One, it was always going to build up to lead to the assembling of The Avengers. Four years in the making and after five films, we were finally treated to one of the greatest superhero films of all time. Joss Whedon’s take was something that none of us were ready for, regardless of the amount of trailers and articles that were released for it. Never have geeks been able to sit and see five of Marvel’s biggest characters in their franchise come together and battle aliens. Not forgetting a cameo from Thanos after the mid-credits.
But when the camera pans around all The Avengers was something that will stick inside the minds of fans (mine too) for a lifetime and will always give me the chills and goosebumps. Spectacular.
From the first Captain America Film we've seen how Hydra were looking to upgrade themselves via the Tesseract and seeing Red Skull in a live action film was pretty awesome. In the second film, The Winter Soldier, an unexpected twist of Hydra infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D. since the end of the Second World War was confirmed by Arnim Zola through a preserved consciousness in a computer or computers at Steve Rodgers’ old barracks. This leaves The Captain and Black Widow on the run as thousands of former agents turn on their former employers.
There's two bits that stick out here; first, the elevator scene where Captain America takes out 10 guys or so and walks (dives out the lift) away. Second, has to be the first first between The Winter Soldier and Rodgers, the hand-to-hand combat, the knife tricks and, of course, the iconic punching of the shield. Superb viewing.
“I have a Vision…”
Even though Avengers: Age of Ultron had it’s critics and may not have done as well as its predecessor (even thought it’s sitting in the top 10 of the highest grossing films of all time) there were moments from that film that made us all drop our jaws in not only shock, but in true disbelief. One of those scenes was watching The Vision (Paul Bettany) come to life.
We've read the comics, we seen the hype but to see him, on screen, talking, interacting, battling and, er, lifting Thor’s hammer was something that will go down as one of the greatest scenes from the MCU. The fact that he appeared at the end of the film showed it wouldn't be the last we see of him.
“We’re the Guardians of The Galaxy…”
Easily one of Marvel’s biggest successes in the MCU and showed that they could pull off a superhero movie based in space. James Gunn directed a masterpiece for us geeks, leaving fans wanting more. We know Marvel like to be light hearted with their films, a few good jokey bits or a character given the task of providing the comic relief, it all works.
But they can also be serious, like when, towards the end of Ronan The Accuser’s reign of terror, the Guardians join together to share the power produced by the Power Stone and wipe out one of the many puppets that Thanos possesses. Of course, we can’t forget the dance off and Groot forming a protective cocoon.
When watching Avengers Assemble, my mind was constantly blown. A group of heroes on one screen, together, hell yeah! But I was also quite looking forward to seeing Agent Phil Coulson, especially in this environment and him being star struck over Captain America was one of the many laughs I enjoyed.
But then Loki had to spoil the show by killing him! As shocked as I was when this happened, it still found myself smiling with one of his final pieces of dialogue when expressing his reaction from the weapon he used “so that’s what it does…”
So that’s the few that stick out for me, how about you?
