The film I saw this evening was Nightcrawler, Nightcrawler centers on Lou Bloom an unemployed man looking for work that stumbles upon the career of filming crime scenes, his passion for the job spins out of control as he starts doing illegal activity to get the best footage possible. Nightcrawler stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Bill Paxton and Riz Ahmed.
There are a lot of positives to this film which include: fantastic acting, brilliant story, great story progression, a really creepy tone and there are some incredibly tense scenes. To expand, the acting in this film by the majority of the cast is really good but the stand outs for this film are Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo whose performances are outstanding and in the case of Gyllenhaal Oscar-worthy; the story in this film is very intriguing and interesting as you see the main character progressing in his job and getting better and better at it and when a certain point in the film arrives the film takes a different turn. The thing that is very interesting with this film is that Lou is the protagonist but is definitely the villain of the story, the guy is super creepy and as he gets better at doing his job the creepiness is more prominent and more disturbing. For large sections toward the end of the film there are extremely tense moments which make the film enjoyable to watch as you don't know what is going to happen, I was on edge for the last 45 minutes of the film.
I do have one negative to the film which is that the film takes a while to get interesting, for the first 30 minutes the film is good but it doesn't have much intrigue it didn't make it boring just not as enjoyable as the rest of the film which is superb and once those plot points develop I was hooked.
Overall I thought this film was fantastic because of how good the plot and the tone were, also because of the phenomenal performance from Jake Gyllenhaal; because of all of these factors and the others I have mentioned I rate this film:
