(Warning - potential SPOILERS for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice may be found below. Proceed with whatever level of caution your natural SPOILER (and speculation)-aversion dictates...)

Now, when the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer hit our computer screens, just after it was screened at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, a whole lot of superheroic awesomeness came along with it. After all, while we didn't quite get to actually see Batman fighting Superman, we did get a pretty extensive look at just what the movie has in store for us when it comes to be-haired Lex Luthor, Wonder Woman, New-Alfred and a whole lot more.

There was, however, one moment that was a little...odd. Check out the trailer again - and in particular, the moment around 02:40 in...

...in which this happens...

...and...actually...

...wait a minute...

Did Batman Just Break a Dude's Neck?

Because it sure looks like he just, well, broke a dude's neck.

Which, seeing as Batman is pretty famous for that whole 'no guns, no killing policy,' seems a little...odd.

I mean, sure, original comic-book Batman was pretty much killing people left, right and center...

...but, ever since then, he's been a whole lot more against randomly murdering criminals for no particular reason...

...which makes this...

...kind of hard to explain.

And yet, try to explain it we very much shall.

Here, then, are three of the more likely possibilities:

1. Batman Is Going to Be Willing to Kill People in Batman v Superman

After all, The Dark Knight Returns - on which the movie is set to be heavily based - may not feature Batman killing, but it was written by Frank Miller, so he's not exactly the most 'hinged' of characters throughout its story. Could that be set to be translated to the big screen as making Batman willing to kill when necessary?

Well, perhaps, but seeing as that whole 'neck-snapping' thing back in Man of Steel didn't go down so well with a whole lot of fans, it'd be a seriously brave move on director Zack Snyder's part to have Batman pull something similar.

An alternative option, then?

2. That's Not Actually Batman

After all, if you're Lex Luthor, what better way to set up Batman as a villain than by framing him for a whole lot of brutal, bloody murder? After all, his mask is supposed to make him unrecognizable, so it surely wouldn't be too tough to hire a guy who looks like him, and then have him kill a bunch of dudes. Plus, the shot in question isn't really close enough up to confirm that it's definitely Ben Affleck in the suit...

The only problem with that theory? This newly released photo...

...which very much seems to confirm that Ben Affleck is the guy in the suit while all that is happening...

The other option, then?

3. It Was All a Dream

Could the whole sequence simply all be a dream? After all, all of those shots of masked soldiers with Kryptonian logos on their sleeves bowing down to Superman have been pretty difficult to explain...

Could all of that, then, ultimately turn out to be an extended dream sequence - one in which Batman snapping a dude's neck is representative of Superman doing much the same thing in Man of Steel?

A nightmare that inspires Bruce Wayne to return as Batman, perhaps? Or one that causes Superman to mistrust both his own motives, and the actions of Batman?

Either way, it might just be the most likely option...

What do you think, though?
