After debuting the show's first gay character in Season 5, The Vampire Diaries is making another step to increase its representation of LGBTQ characters by introducing its first lesbian couple.
Nora and Mary Louise are two heretic vampires who have been in a secret relationship since the 1900s who will step into an age where same-sex relationships are accepted for the first time in their long lives. According to Julie Plec, these freedoms will be a lot for these sapphic lovers to take in, she explained:
The idea of just able to hold hands in public is a big deal
Although we don't know much about the characters (or, indeed, who is cast to play them) just yet, we do know they have a passionate, yet realistic relationship and are fiercely protective of each other. TV Line wrote that:
Mary Louise’s constant doting can sometimes feel a bit smothery for fiery Nora’s liking. Still, anyone foolish enough to cross either of them will feel both their wraths
It's great to see that instead of having gay characters with no romantic interests in sight, The Vampire Diaries is taking the next step to represent same-sex relationships. Bravo!
