With director Zack Snyder already drawing heavily from the classic Batman tale "The Dark Knight Returns" for the design of his bat suit in the upcoming 2016 blockbuster Batman vs Superman : Dawn of Justice , should director and leading man Ben affleck be looking for other popular stories to draw from for his future standalone bat flicks , he should look no further than to the Arkham series of games from recent years .
Proving to be not only massively popular with fans and financially lucrative for Warner Brother Games they have also shown they have serious narrative heft with excellent writing and tonnes of fan service crammed in. Should Affleck decide to base it on the first of the Arkham games "Arkham Asylum" the possibilities for amazing storytelling and potential awesome sequels would be endless since he would have a vast amount of material to delve into.
With the asylum itself set to feature in Suicide Squad , mainstream audiences previously unfamiliar with the institution will be introduced to it and fans already familiar will get a taste of what's to come . With Joker's escape inevitable it would set up Arkham Asylum nicely with Batman returning the escaped Joker back just like the beginning of the game. Joker would then soon break loose and take control of the asylum with the help of Harley Quinn , trapping Batman in a tense cat and mouse game as he navigates the linear corridors of the Joker controlled asylum . This would also be an opportunity to introduce other villains into the universe and establish why they hold a grudge against The Dark Knight as he is the reason they are locked up in the decaying , ageing grounds of Arkham.
Arkham Asylum would also be the perfect opportunity for Jared Leto and Ben Affleck to prove to critics and fans alike that they are worthy successors to the iconic roles made famous by previous incarnations such as Micheal Keaton , Jack Nicholson , Christian Bale and Heath Ledger. While most of the criticism leveled towards Leto's version is for the most part aesthetic , a lot of fans simply don't believe Affleck can deliver the goods as the Caped Crusader after his role in the terribly received big screen adaption of Daredevil. While the look chosen for the Joker and Ben Afflecks acting ability both raise questions I believe the claustrophobic and atmospheric setting of a mental institution gone wrong will bring the best out of both actors and allow them to bring depth into there performances when the setting is limited and the over blown CGI set pieces are left to the wayside. We already know Jared Leto is an excellent actor from his Oscar winning performance in Dallas Buyers Club and from the recently released Suicide Squad trailer we got a small glimpse of what to expect from him. Perhaps it is overzealous to judge his portrayal of the Joker from a small portion of a two minute teaser trailer but I already get the sense fans will still not be convinced of him in that movie as from the brief glimpse we are given I thought his voice was too similar to Ledgers version but I digress as it is really too early to judge him based on that , but what I do believe if given a movie that focuses mainly on him and Batman that he will make the role his own , after all the part of Joker is a dream role for an actor as it allows the performer to go over the top but it will be the subtle differences and nuances that differentiate Leto's from the rest and I am firmly in the camp that he will do this despite the dubious look chosen for him . As for Affleck I think he looks amazing in the Dark Knight Returns based suit and from what we've seen from the Batman v Superman trailer he will capture the menacing and intimidating nature of Batman but given the chance in the smaller scale movie I propose he will be able to convey the worlds greatest detective aspect of the character as he will have to use all his cunning to defeat the Joker , not the mechanized super suit that he will use to do battle against the Man of Steel.
That has always been Batman's problem meshing with the rest of the Justice League , how does a man (albeit a very rich and well trained one ) compete in a world where aliens powered by our sun can fire lasers from there eyes and fly like a speeding bullet ? Arkham Asylum would address this question , it would establish just where and why Batman fits in this universe , while he may not be a being of godly power ,he is one of the worlds sharpest minds and without a doubt the worlds greatest detective . He doesn't need powers to defeat his foes and overcome insurmountable odds . What is Superman without his powers ? A reporter . What is Batman without his suit ? A genius level intellect , master of all known martial arts with massive funds and resources. In the Arkham standalone batman would use his keen mind to adapt and overcome the sick , sadistic obstacles Joker will trow in his way and then use his brawn to subdue the madman along with any other loose criminal that gets in his way .This to me is by far the best way to establish Batman in this franchise and also the best way to turn skeptical fans around into embracing DC's new film universe.
If you agree with my points or think you have a better idea for where DC should take Batman feel free to comment your thoughts below ,this has been a Hans Honest Opinion thanks for reading and peace out!
