Batman is one of the most complex characters in comic book history. Largely because his alter ego Bruce Wayne has been through so much. That's right, Bruce Wayne is the alter ego of Batman and not the other way around. I know this is a very complex theory but hear me out. I believe death has impacted Bruce Wayne like no other comic book character ever. In the newest [Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice](tag:711870) trailer you can see and feel what Bruce Wayne went through and if you pay attention to the entire trailer you see a lot more.
Batman vs Superman Trailer
I know what you are thinking....another origin Batman story. I get it...I felt the same way. However, as you watch the trailer completely and pay close attention to Bruce Wayne you start to get an understanding of what Zack Snyder, director of this epic movie, and Chris Terrio, the writer of this piece of genius, are trying to accomplish with this character. Which is showing us what has always driven Bruce Wayne.....death. So I would like to share how I think Bruce will be impacted by death in this new DC Cinematic Universe. The first death was of course watching his parents die right in front of him.
When Bruce witnessed his parents death right in front of him something snapped; you might even say he had a mental breakdown and became someone else......Batman. That's right Bruce Wayne is mentally ill. Why else would a billionaire dress up as a bat and fight criminals? But that is another story for another article. Clearly the death of Bruce Wayne's parents drove him to become a great hero. Bruce used millions of dollars to support his addiction of cleaning up Gotham. And if I say so myself in this new DC Cinematic Universe the Batcave is not suffering from a lack of upgrades.
So yea this Bruce Wayne has clearly been driven by his parents death as he became Batman because of it. But I believe in this new DC Cinematic Universe that it was the death of another that caused Batman to retire and become Bruce Wayne full time.
In the comics the Joker kills Jason Todd aka Robin which Bruce Wayne blames himself for. My theory is that in the newly established DC Cinematic Universe Bruce Wayne is so overwhelmed with the death of Robin that he decides to retire from Batman never to dawn the cape again. Or could death bring the Batman back?
As we know from the second Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer Bruce Wayne was in Metropolis when Superman and Zod had their epic battle in Man of Steel. Likely Bruce is there on business when out of no where 2 aliens with the power of gods are destroying the city. The retired Batman likely had many business partners and co-workers that he considered friends. It only makes sense that Bruce would be checking on these people that he calls friends.
Ben Affleck (playing Bruce Wayne) is such a great actor at this point of his career. Sorry but its amazing how you can see the pain and anger from Bruce Wayne in the above shot. I believe witnessing the dramatic death of his friends is what drives Batman to come out of retirement and start mapping out a plan to kill Superman......I told you he was mentally ill!!! Which brings me to my next point about death and Bruce Wayne.
As a human what kind of death wish do you have to have to find yourself face to face with an alien with the power of a god that you purposely pissed off? Bruce Wayne doesn't care about his own death which drives his actions as Batman to another level. How ironic is it that Bruce Wayne became Batman because of death and will be so influenced by death in this DC Cinematic that his own life is worthless to him. This is a Batman that would gladly accept his own death if he felt he was truly saving the human race. This is a Batman that I want to see on the silver screen!
These are my thoughts on The Batman aka Bruce Wayne and his relationship with death. Do you agree with my assessment? Do you hate my assessment? Do you have an assessment of your own? What ever the case may be I would love to discuss it with you below.
