(Warning - potential SPOILERS for future seasons of Agent Carter, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe at large, lie below...Proceed with whatever level of caution your natural SPOILER-averseness dictates...)
Now, there aren't too many more beloved characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe than Tony Stark and Peggy Carter - with both Robert Downey Jr. and Hayley Atwell having snatched the hearts of millions of fans with their spot-on portrayals of the heroes.
That popularity, in fact, is likely why the recent burst of fan-speculation linking the two of them in a distinctly direct fashion has proven so popular. Specifically, the strand of debate that asks:
Could Peggy Carter Be Tony Stark's Mother?
After all, the theory goes - she's one of the few famous characters who've thus far appeared in the earlier years of the MCU who could, biologically-speaking, be Tony's mother. What's more, she and (Tony's father) Howard Stark certainly know each other, which means it is at least theoretically possible.
There are certainly issues when it comes to the whole 'Peggy was alive the whole way throughout the whole of Tony's life, so why wouldn't she have, y'know, made sure he was doing alright' thing, but it's still not so far out of the realms of possibility that it absolutely couldn't happen.
Except, of course, for the fact that:
Hayley Atwell Just Said the Idea Makes No Sense
Specifically, she had this to say, when speaking to HeyuGuys about the whole idea:
"I think it would be quite… it would undermine the relationship she has with Captain America...And I also think she doesn’t trust Howard in that respect, so she would be lowering her standards if she ended up with Howard."
Which, seeing as Atwell knows Peggy better than more-or-less anyone else at this point, might well be that. Except, of course, for two keys things:
1. Atwell Left Open a Window of Possibility for Fans Hoping to See Howard and Peggy Get Together
Simply by adding:
"...But then it could blossom into a perfect romance! Anything is possible."
Which is certainly true - especially in the weird and wonderful world of superhero movies. The more interesting option Atwell offered up, though?
2. Peggy Carter Could Have a Different (Fan-Pleasing) Pairing in Store For Her
As Atwell put it:
"I think people on Twitter are keen on Angie and Peggy being together, which I think is a fantastically original idea. I also know from the comics that Peggy had the first interracial kiss, so that’s something we could possibly explore. So there’s plenty of opportunities for romance in Peggy’s life."
Either of which options would certainly seem a more interesting - and Peggy Carter-like - outcome than Peggy simply ending up with her rich playboy frenemy.
What do you reckon, though?
