The end of [The Avengers: Age Of Ultron](tag:293035) saw the introduction of a brand new team ready to lead the Avengers to future adventures! And with [Captain America: Civil War](tag:994409) primed to divide the team even further, could Spider-Man be the new team leader for [The Avengers: Infinity War](tag:738027)?
It's entirely possible that Infinity War Part 1 will see an entirely new team, and after his debut in Civil War, Spider-Man could very well lead it. Here's what we know so far, and why this new line up is the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe...
Civil War: Avengers Divided
Peter Parker has a crucial role to play in the next Marvel outing. If they obey the comic plot, Spider-Man will be caught between Iron Man and Captain America in the ensuing conflict, and in the wake of destruction may be left to pick up the pieces. We aren't sure how the plot will play out (though Bucky is sure to be the focus of the film!), but there are definitely big changes on the horizon that will leave the team fractured and in need of a new leader.
Peter is perfect to bring the team together: as an outsider he can add a fresh perspective, but throughout the film he will definitely endear himself to our heroes. It's been confirmed that he is no stranger to the hero game, as he has been secretly crime fighting for years, as Kevin Feige revealed...
"There is a young kid already running around New York City in a homemade version of the Spider-Man costume in the MCU, you just don’t know it yet.“
Could Peter Parker be the missing link in the Avengers chain, the one to bring the team back together in the aftermath of Civil War?
A new team for Infinity War!
Why will Infinity War Part 1 feature a new lineup instead of the returning heroes? This is a definite possibility, thanks to what we know about the actors' contracts. I've already talked about how Thor, Iron-Man, and Captain America may not survive the Infinity War (and you can read about that here!). Thanks to hints from the actors about leaving the franchise, the line up in Infinity War may be different than we expect.
There's a bit of a mystery surrounding just how Infinity War is legally considered by Marvel: Chris Hemsworth has talked about Parts 1 and 2 as though they were the same film, yet admitted his contract only extends to Part 2, and EXCLUDES Part 1. The same goes for Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans. This could have been an oversight on Marvel's part, or could this legal tidbit give us a hint about how the Infinity War will play out?
According to the Russos, directors of both Civil War and Infinity War, Captain America 3 will be the build up to "the real battle" in Avengers 3. There are some real game changing events coming, and that leaves Infinity War open to debut a totally new team, while the other heroes rebuild their lives.
So why should Spidey lead?
There are several reasons why Spidey could be the one to lead the team to victory... or into a tight spot so the veteran heroes can return in Part 2 to save their proteges. So let's look at why the Web Slinger is the perfect Avengers figurehead.
- Recognisability: yes, this is a very cold blooded way of looking at things, but as one of Marvel's most popular characters, having Spider-Man as the team leader is a great way to pull in audiences.
- A youthful outlook: maybe this is exactly what the Avengers need - Peter could help revitalise the team after Civil War leaves them broken.
- He's a people person: Spider-Man just loves to talk, and to bring people together. His indestructible sense of humour makes him the perfect candidate for leadership.
But what do you think? Should Spider-Man lead the new Avengers in Infinity War Part 1, or should the old team get back together again? Let us know in the comments, or write your own post!
