Today I watched a more recent film than my last two I reviewed which was The Monuments Men which achieved great critical shame but my Dad wanted to watch it so we did and it wasn't that bad. The Monuments Men tells the true story of a group of people involved in the world of art who are sent on a mission by the US Government to retrieve art stolen by the Nazis and return it to their rightful owners. The Monuments Men stars George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin, Hugh Bonneville and Bob Balaban.
There are a few positives to this film which are: the acting is very good, the story progression is very good and the humour is great. To expand, it is expected that because this film has an all-star cast it would have good acting and that rings true in this film as all the performances are really good and capture the characters really well. Also the film is very funny, not funny enough to be classed as a comedy but funny nonetheless, the character interactions are very good and that is the main reason why this film is enjoyable.
Even though I enjoyed this film I do have a few problems with it, which are that the film lacks plot and is predictable also the film doesn't accurately portray war. Basically if you took the plot description I have put at the top of this review and think about what could happen that's pretty much what happens (spoiler alert: they recover the art and a couple of them die) and because its a true story you could say that there couldn't be much more to do, however there is no attempt to flesh it out with battles, tension or emotion. My other problem is the misrepresentation of war, yes people die and yes there is danger (like the landmine scene) but the film's best part (the humour) is also its downfall as scenes with death or danger are almost shrugged off as a joke so a perfect situation to turn from funny to serious and make scenes very emotional isn't done which are wasted opportunities.
Overall I actually really enjoyed this film however I did have a few problems with it, these problems didn't mess up my enjoyment of the film though so taking everything into consideration I rate this film:
