Natasha Leggero and Riki Lindhome's disturbed brain child premiered on Comedy Central on June 23. This satirical take on PBS' acclaimed series Downtown Abbey is set in Newport, Rhode Island and takes place during early 20th century. The series chronicles the opulent and pretentious Bellacourt family; specifically sisters Lilian (Leggero) and Beatrice (Lindhome) and their self-indulgent, scandalous lifestyle.
The first episode I saw was "Funeral" where the sisters lie that their husbands have passed away and throw an outlandish funeral to attract potential suitors. Meanwhile, their head butler Peepers' adopted American Indian relatives stop by and he hides them so his employers don't find out about his "trivial" background. Just how it sounds indicates it's going to be ludicrous, politically incorrect, zany, over the top and limitless adventure, and despite not liking the first half this is what made me fall in love with the show. Especially the quote, "do you want to fuck on this pile of sleeping children?"
True to Leggero's comedic style Another Period is very tongue in cheek. To the point where the tongue's made a huge gaping, bloody and infected hole. Yet, what separates it from typical adult shows is it doesn't rely on swears, and crudeness to compensate for characters and story. Speaking of characters, each individual has their own distinguishing personality, idiosyncrasies and quirks which are expanded by incredibly funny performances from a menagerie colorful and talented comedian such as: Michael Ian Black, Jason Ritter, Paget Brewster, David Wain, Thomas Lennon, Kate Micci etc.
Tune into Another Period on Tuesdays at 10:30/9:30 central.
