I can't be the only person that was a super fan of these books and the Nickelodeon TV show that followed.
For those of you that don't know. Animorphs was a series of young adult books by K.A. Applegate (that eventually led to the TV series) about a group of teens who were visited by aliens and given the power to shapeshift into any animal they touched. Now if you were a fan of the show you know that the CGI did not do the series much justice but even despite that, the show lasted for two seasons and was pretty gritty and entertaining for a teen show. I figured with the recent boom of late adult novels becoming films (Harry Potter, Twilight, Hunger Games) its only right to backtrack and address this book series which has the potential to be a mega hit. BTW I won't follow the source material at all, as I don't remember the books much, but these are my original ideas, but the characters are from the books.
First lets step behind the scenes and see who is going to run this joint.
Max Landis is a screenwriter and director most known for Chronicle and the upcoming action comedy American Ultra. I think Max could insert a grit to the films reminiscent of Chronicle. So that teens and young adults are entertained but he could also give the films a sense of realism as he did for chronicle.
I'd like the films to have an adventurous, EPIC, feel. So why not get the EPIC king himself? And in my fictional mind Peter Jackson doesn't have anything else to do. So he jumps in immediately and decides to direct the entire trilogy. His talents would be particularly helpful when expanding on the Andalite world, which is the intelligent alien species that gave the teens their powers.
Now to the films
The first film of the Cinematic Universe will introduce the audience to the teens. Jake, Rachel, Tobias, Cassie, and Marco. After a soft but preferably long introduction to the teens and their lives. The teens find a crashed space craft, and within it they find Prince Elfangor-Sirinial-Shamtul. He tells the teens that he is dying and that he came to Earth to save human beings from the Yeerks an evil alien species that lives in the brains of other species. Elfangor gives the teens the power to shapeshift into any animal they touch, but they CANNOT stay in form for longer than 2 hours or they will permanently stay in that animal form. The film will have a few montages of the teens learning their powers and using them for fun, but they'll eventually realize that what Elfangor said is true and its happening all around them. Their classmates, teachers, and even family begin to act strangely. So they begin to train....
II. Animorphs: Rise of the Yeerks
Animorphs 2 picks up immediately after the first. The teens have mastered their powers and are visited by a new Andalite named Ax who begins to help them with their fight. Ax is eventually kidnapped by the yeerks and held hostage in an attempt to draw the animorphs to them. The animorphs attempt to go immediately thinking their training is enough but it results in Tobias being trapped as a hawk because he stayed in form for too long trying to spy on the Yeerks. The team battles the Yeerks defeating them after a long and CGI filled battle. The team saves Ax but he warns them that this is just the beginning.
III. Animorphs: The Revelation
By this time the films are bonafide cash cows that have grossed at least $50 million dollars so its time to up the anty. In this film the Yeerks manage to infiltrate the Russian army and begin a nuclear war on the entire world. The animorphs attempt to join the government and help but are first met with disdain. The world now openly knows of their powers after the large scale battle of the Yeerks but they're not taken seriously because of their age (16-17 by now). The animorphs infiltrate the United States army on their own during the War and attempt to help the soldiers save the world. In the process Tobias is shot down and killed by a sniper. The team regroups and asks Ax is their anyway to harness his shapeshifting powers and give it to the soldiers. He agrees to allow the military to work on his biogenetics against the animorphs wishes. They harness the power and begin to insert his DNA into soldiers. Armies of animorphs are formed and used to take down the human russian army of yeerks. The world, at least Earth is saved. The teens graduate high school and attempt to live regular lives.
Once again this isn't in line with the books or the TV show at all but I feel it'd need to be revised to a bigger scale for film so this is my personal take. If the last film of the trilogy is successful enough a new trilogy will begin a few years after titled....
1. The Andalite Chronicles
These films would serve as prequels to the Animorph trilogy and will follow Elfangor before he came to Earth and show life on the Andalite planet as well as their war with the Yeerks. This is where Peter Jackson's directing skills can be used vastly. Their world would be rich and foreign with other species and creatures making appearances. To make the original author K.A. Applegate happy these films will stay completely committed to the source material but won't mention the other animorph films until the very end when Elfangor is sent to earth. Following a prequel trilogy, there may be a new trilogy of an aged group of Animorphs getting back into action.
