Like all fan theories, even highly popular ones, you need to take them with a grain of salt. In the case of this one that revolves around [Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice](tag:711870), that statement holds true, but also, it could be verified when the movie comes out next March.

The theory essentially says that the new Joker, played by Jared Leto, is actually a lot different than what we've seen before; specifically, the late Heath Ledger's version. According to Reddit user Jason-G169, our new Joker is actually Jason Todd, the foolhardy Robin character from the comics.

In the comics, the Joker murders Jason Todd, which leads to a period of mourning by Batman who feels he messed up as a guardian and father figure to Todd. When he comes back in the comic books, he looks very different. Yet similar...

In The Killing Joke, one of the most classic Batman comics, the Joker gets tricked into becoming the Red Hood (a fairly random villain), right before he falls into the vat of acid that transforms him into the Clown Prince of Crime. So, even though the Joker discarded that moniker, Jason took up the title as Red Hood after he was resurrected.

So the point is, this fan theory actually has been explored before in the comics, because there is precedent of Jason Todd taking the Joker's identity. The Joker being a former Robin completely shakes up everything we had previously thought about and kind of explains why Jared Leto's Joker looks so crazy, tattooed up, etc.

It doesn't seem all that likely that the Joker would have the patience or wherewithal to sit down and get all of those tattoos done. But what if it's not really the Joker we've come to expect? The J on his cheek MIGHT stand for "Joker"... or, it could stand for "JASON." There's a pretty blatant reminder tattoo on his right arm of a bird - potentially a robin?

Does the skull in a jester hat make sense if Joker ripped it off of a poison POG from the '90s, or might it possibly stand for Jason Todd's perceived "death" and rebirth into the maniacal jester as shown in the Suicide Squad trailer, seen below?

You may remember this quick shot from the Batman v Superman trailer:

It says "The Joke's on you BATMAN" and it's defacing a Robin's suit. Could it be that Batman's sidekick and best friend has become his mortal enemy? And the joke would be on Batman considering the fact that he wasn't able to save his friend from the original Joker? It kind of makes sense given this image:

This apparent "new" Joker knows a lot about Bruce Wayne's past. The family could refer to a lot here. It could either be Thomas and Martha Wayne, his parents, it could be the perceived "death" of Jason Todd, or it could even have something to do with Dick Grayson's grave. The message directly recalls the comic storyline "A Death in the Family," in which Jason Todd dies.

There's a quote, too, in the new BvS trailer. It goes, "20 years in Gotham. How many good guys are left? How many stayed that way?" Hmm...

What do you think? Is Leto's character Jason Todd or are we really just making something out of nothing? Is it just the regular, good ol' Joker? Either way, I'm pretty excited to see what DC does with both BvS and Suicide Squad.

Is this theory legit?
