Johnny Depp has made his transformation into one of the most notorious gangsters in american history. "Black Mass" looks like it could be an Oscar contender based on the buzz it has already generated from the trailer release. Films about gangsters and violent criminals have been coming out for years and some question if these films should even be made since it is considered to be nothing more than free advertising for them. It would be interesting to hear Johnny Depp's thoughts on this subject, but maybe another time.
Here's the plot synopsis:
The film depicts the true story of Whitey Bulger, the brother of a state senator and the most infamous violent criminal in the history of South Boston. Following a string of too many of his violent actions, he becomes an FBI informant for 30 years in order to take down a Mafia family invading his turf. It starts around the late 1970s and early 1980s when Bulger was just beginning this operation, around the time when he was becoming the crime boss of Irish Winter Hill Gang.
Depp is taking on a very unique role in this film and has taken this character and made it his own based on what can be viewed in the trailer. Whitey Bulger is still considered to be one of the most violent gangsters in history, his reputation elicits fear and respect. This will be regarded as one of the most controversial films of the year even though it will most likely be praised for the actor performances and execution. Gang violence will always be a sensitive topic, though this film will spark interesting debate on the topic. Overall this film looks like a much needed victory for Johnny Depp as well as another introspective look at a violent period in American history.
