Pizza, With A Side Order Of Justice
Comic-Con 2015 was an amazing event for geeks around the world. We saw a couple of trailers that amped up the excitement for DC's cinematic universe, had a ton of amazing announcements and cast photos, and saw all kinds of wickedly cool cosplay. With this year's event being so jam-packed with content and leaks, it's very easy for smaller headlines to get overlooked or for some stories to even fly under the radar completely.
That said though, WHY THE SHELL are more people not freaking out about the Batman/TMNT crossover?!
Yep, that's right folks. This November, DC Comics and IDW Publishing are working together to bring the turtles to the dark streets of Gotham in the form of a comic miniseries. Take a look at the first official synopsis below:
In the ongoing power struggle between the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, General Krang, and the Foot Clan, allegiances have shifted and the battle lines have been drawn. Krang concocts a plan to rid himself of both the Turtles and Shredder by transporting them to another dimension, where they land in the dark and dangerous streets of Gotham City. It isn't long before they encounter Gotham's most famous resident, Batman. The Caped Crusader may be their only hope of overcoming their enemies and getting back home. But not before they encounter a whole cast of Gotham's most infamous rogues.
That means that not only will Batman and the Turtles have to work together, but we can potentially see a confrontation between Batman and The Shredder! Add in Bebop and Rocksteady and you've got all the ingredients for one hell of a story. Keep in mind though, if Batman has to deal with their villains, then it's also possible that the Turtles may go toe-to-toe with infamous Gotham menaces such as Killer Croc, Scarecrow and, hopefully, The Joker!
In fact, with these two universes merging, I would love to see these characters pair up and work together at some point during the story:
Bebop, Rocksteady & Killer Croc
Killer Croc, Bebop and Rocksteady were all once human until they were turned into their beast-like forms that we know today. While they're all incredibly strong and ferocious, they're not really the brightest villains (I threw a rock at him) around and are always delegated to the henchmen status. The three of these baddies working together is what you can all a "no brainer".
Raphael & Red Hood
Raphael loves his brothers even though he may not always agree with them. However, unlike the other Turtles that value the way of the ninja and try to keep the violence down to a minimum, Raphael knows when a firm hand is needed in the situation. Sounds like someone else from the DC Universe, doesn't it? While Jason Todd's Red Hood persona was first introduced as a villain, in recent years his character has evolved more into an antihero. If there's any Turtle that can relate to Todd's way of handling bad guys, it's Raphael.
Michelangelo & Robin (Damien Wayne)
Michelangelo acts like a kid and can get a little out of control at times. Damien Wayne is actually just a kid that can get out of control sometimes (a lot). While Damien's overly serious and arrogant attitude may seem like a mismatch for Mikey's childish humor at first, these two have the potential to have one of the best subplots ever!
Donatello & Oracle
If the Turtles jumped between dimensions in their fight against Krang, then that means there's a lot of technical science stuff going on behind the scenes. Donatello has the information and will need access to the resources to stop Krang. Oracle has the resources but will need the information about the enemy to thwart their evil plans. Match made in binary heaven?
Batman & Leonardo
Batman and Leo are both the leaders of their respective groups. Both have been trained in the way of the Ninja and both know how to fight from the shadows. They both also know when violence is necessary but also respect the value of life. Batman and Leonardo won't just make a great team, I can completely see them gaining an unrivaled mutual respect for each other in their fight against evil. Also, it would be amazing if the two actually fought each other at first thinking the other was a villain.
And the match-ups don't end there. With more amazing characters such as Splinter, Casey Jones, April O'Neil, Shredder, The Joker, Bane, and Catwoman, the possibilities are numerous! The union of these two universes is a big deal and this news has only made the wait for November even more excruciating in addition to all of the great video games and movies being released this year!
And to those of you who are thinking, "Oh, this is just a comic. I don't care." then think about it this way. Batman and TMNT are both some of the biggest intellectual properties out there. Both IPs are currently popular in the public eye. Even if this never gets made into a big screen movie, keep in mind that DC's animated films are absolutely incredible (mostly). It's not beyond reason to assume that if this miniseries is successful enough, we can, and probably will, see it be adapted into a DC Animation release. You know, the same animation studio that just turned Batman into a freaking vampire!
Now the real question is: What toppings does Batman like on his pizza?
