Supergirl - descending to earth very soon
Supergirl - descending to earth very soon

With CBS releasing Supergirl in October. Some people are sceptical about how the show will be. Others think it's a refreshing change. Judging by the trailer that was released I have to say I am excited by it. For anyone who is not familier with Supergirl the shows premise is this..

Twenty-four-year-old Kara Zor-El, who was taken in by the Danvers family when she was 13 after being sent away from Krypton, must learn to embrace her powers after previously hiding them. The Danvers teach her to be careful with her powers, until she has to reveal them during an unexpected disaster, setting her on her journey of heroism.

Melissa Benoist will play the shows protagonist Supergirl. With a great supporting cast, Supergirl will be a huge success. Here are six reasons as to why.

1. Supergirl is a role model.

Just like Wonder Woman, Supergirl is a role model for women. She is a strong character when she is Supergirl. Her powers equal that of Supermans. Her journey in becoming Supergirl will be a great story. Kara Zor-El is a great character who can attract more girls to watch the show. DC mini series is embracing diversity in gender mainstream roles. We have the animated series of Vixen. However, Supergirl is live action and with a major company in CBS, Supergirl is in good hands.

2. Supergirl has a huge fanbase.

Supergirl is already popular.

One aspect of Supergirl is that she is a household name. Anyone who is a fan of comics will know who Supergirl is. That should come as no surprise as she has been around since 1959. In that time she has teamed up with her famous cousin. She has been a part of the Legion of Superheros and Teen Titans. Most recently however, she has been part of the Red Lantern Corps. Supergirl has been in most of the main stories in DC. She has been part of 52 and Crisis on Infinite Earth's and so on.

3. Supporting cast is strong.

Calista Flockhart
Calista Flockhart

With any great series comes a great cast. Supergirl has a good cast indeed. Flockhart is a fantastic actress who really defined the queen "bitch" in the trailer. She will be Karas boss. Then there is David Harewood. A British actor who recently stared in Homeland. Harewood is playing the special forces soldier..

A former CIA agent who is the head of the Department of Extra-Normal Operations (DEO), who goes on high alert when Supergirl reveals herself, worried that her otherworldly abilities pose a threat to humankind.

Chyler Leigh will play Karas adoptive sister. She will also play a big part with Harewoods character.

Kara's adoptive sister and a doctor who will try to learn as much as she can about Kara's Kryptonian culture. She works for Henshaw at the DEO.
David Harewood will play Hank Henshaw.
Chyler Leigh will play Alex Danvers.

4. Making a positive statement.

Yes...a interracial relationship.

One of the biggest outcrys for this show was changing Jimmy Olsens ethnicity. Mehcad Brooks will play Jimmy Olsen. Of course Brooks is black and in the comics Olsen is white. When Brooks was announced in January 2015 the reaction was to be expected. Many blaming that Brooks is just a PC stunt. Others feel that white roles are being sacrificed for the sake of diversity. Maybe they are but it's needed. People I seem to forget history. White actors have been casted for non white roles for decades.

Johnny Depp played a native Indian in Lone Ranger.
Mickey Rooney played the part of a Japanese person.
Lawrence Olivier played Othello even though he is Caucasian.
Burt Lancaster played Geronimo a native Indian.
Jennifer Lawrence played Katniss Evergreen. In the Hunger Games novel Katniss is actually mixed race.

I could go on and on. I just wanted to prove that white roles are not the only so called victims. So when I see racist backlash it makes me laugh of the irony. People are really upset because Olsen is Supergirls love interest. No disrespect to the character of Olsen but he is not a mainstream character. He is a nerd who is neurotic. Brooks Olsen is a suave good looking man. Kara is a pretty blonde girl. One thing that racists can not stand is a interracial relationship between a black man and a white woman. So I applaud the show for ignoring the pathetic hate.

5. Supergirl has great enemies.

With a great superhero comes great villians. One thing that Supergirl is not short of. When the series gets going we will undoubtedly see more villians come out of the woodwork. Here are some of the villians that will hopefully make an appearance.

The Cyber Demon...Brimstone.

Bizzaro Supergirl.

Appex.
From the ancient times...Atlas.

There are plenty more. But if Supergirl is a hit, which it will be. We will see more and more. In relation to this is due to the agency that David Harewoods character plays. They are working to stop aliens from entering earth or stopping them while on it.

6. Supergirl is in the same universe as Flash and Green Arrow.

Although they are currently on two different networks. CW for Flash, Arrow and Legends. Supergirl is on CBS. However, both parties have not ruled out a potential crossover in the future. As this statement confirms..

Later in the afternoon at his other office on the Warner Bros. lot, Berlanti meets with fellow producer Ali Adler and Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood to go over looks for their upcoming revamp of Supergirl. The show will follow 24-year-old Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, and with a twist that that could melt fanboy brains, Berlanti says it’s possible this Supergirl could enter the worlds of Arrow and The Flash.

The potential of Supergirl is vast. If it is done right it will be the top show for the DC mini universe.
