In Mockingjay Part 1, Katniss is asked to sing in a scene beside a beautiful, serene body of water. She obliges, and the song becomes the soundtrack of the rebel movement. The scene was shot at Bellwood Quarry, surprisingly close to downtown Atlanta.
The quarry is not open to the public, and I had to get special permission to accompany a group from the city of Atlanta's Watershed Department while they were inspecting the location. There are plans underway for the quarry to become a reservoir, and the currently exposed floor will be under water.
There is also talk of making the surrounding area into Atlanta's biggest recreation facility. Bellwood Park would be incorporated into the Westside Beltline.
The quarry has been the site of several film locations, including a number of scenes in the first season of The Walking Dead.
The exposed rock reveals countless textures and patterns, surrounding the water at the bottom with beautiful vertical walls.
Work on the reservoir is scheduled to commence soon, forever transforming this popular filming location.
You can see additional images of the Bellwood Quarry, and find links to further information about it's history and future, in my previous post about The Walking Dead.
Let me know if there are any scenes or locations filmed around Atlanta that you'd like to see covered!
