I haven't been able to look at an owl since Hedwig bit the dust in the finale of the Harry Potter series. All it did is make me one angry bird fan.
That is until I stumbled upon the owl based inspirations of Magdalena Ruta, a Cracow Poland architect student and aspiring owl illustrator. Specifically her subject is Sowulka Owls found everywhere in Poland.
Sowu is the Polish for owl. Ulka is the plural extension.
Not every owl in Poland is a Sowulka. True Sowulkas are rounded, cute and adorable. They are the Minions of Poland. That is why they are the owls most often found in jewelry and kitschy mass produced pottery.
Sowulka lend themselves to caricature. They beg to be turned into cartoons. They can be turned into anything and anyone. They are the perfect subjects for an owl crazed superhero comics and pop culture fan like Magdalena.
Ruta's Sowulka caricatures are plastered to some of the sidewalks and buildings all over Cracow. They are even popular enough to generate a small t-shirt business.
You can go to Magdalena Ruta's Facebook page to see more of her owl and other works.
