Now I may be a bit biased since I grew up in this city, but just the other day I was thinking about film locations in Pittsburgh, PA and how it is the king of horror/sci-fi. With that said, being from Pittsburgh may or may not account for my taste in movies lol. For a brief period of time I worked in the film industry there and I remember sifting through photos that location scouts had taken through out the years. I thought to myself, this place really is the perfect setting for any type of movie...but it is definitely made for horror and sci-fi.

I mean lets be honest. This city packs a mean punch when it comes to the number of movies that are filmed there, but look at this list:

Night of the Living Dead (1968)

The Crazies (1973)

Martin (1977)

Dawn of the Dead (1978)

Creepshow (1982)

Day of the Dead (1985)

Deadtime Stories (1986)

RoboCop (1987)

Monkey Shines (1988)

Night of the Living Dead (1990)

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Whispers in the Dark (1992)

Innocent Blood (1992)

The Dark Half (1989)

Diabolique (1996)

Stigmata (1999)

The Mothman Prophecies (2002)

Land of the Dead (2005)

My Blood Valentine 3D (2009)

Homecoming (2009)

The Road (2009)

Sorority Row (2009)

Super 8 (2011)

That is just one classic, after another, after another after another. And I don't just mean any classic, these are game changers! Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, The Silence of the Lambs and the list goes on. These are some tough titles to beat when it comes to horror.

My two favorite spots from these movies have to be the Monroeville Mall (where Dawn of the Dead was filmed) and Evans City Cemetery. I worked briefly in the Monroeville Mall during college and I am such a raging zombie nerd that the thought of working in the Dawn of the Dead mall NEVER got old and I would talk about it every chance that I got. You wouldn't believe how many people had no idea that they were shopping in the mall from Dawn of the Dead, tsk tsk.

My other favorite spot around Pittsburgh is Evans City Cemetery. Even if I remove the fact that this is the cemetery in Night of the Living Dead, it STILL creeps me out. "They're coming to get you Barbara!" haunted us as teens as we ran around the cemetery trying to catch fire flies. YIKES! What were we thinking lol.

What is your favorite horror or sci-fi movie that was filmed in Pittsburgh?
