I may be young, 17 to be exact, but I sure know about The Breakfast Club. The John Hughes directed Brat Pack film was and forever will be one of the greatest high school movies of all time. This teenage drama has always been one of my favorite films ever and I really connected to it. This movie really showed that no matter how different we may seem, we can still find something in common with each other. You had Emilio Estevez as the popular jock, Molly Ringwald as the preppy rich girl, Anthony Michael Hall as the nerd, Judd Nelson as the stoner bully, and Ally Sheedy as the basket case. There is no way that anyone could re-create the magic of the first film, but if they were to re-make the film, I have some ideas for who could fill these roles.
Andrew Clark - The Athelete
Josh Hutcherson is one of the best young actors out there today. He was really put on the map with his breakout performance in The Hunger Games opposite Jennifer Lawrence. Hutcherson definitely has the looks of your standard jock type. The best part of Emilio Estevez's performance was his calm yet cocky demeanor. He really was a good kid who made a dumb mistake that landed him in detention on a Saturday morning. Josh naturally seems like a quiet kid, yet he has the ability to add a little swagger if he needs to. Josh Hutcherson could definitely fill that role and do it pretty well.
Claire Standish - The Rich Girl
I already know what your thinking, "of course he chooses Emma Stone to play a red head." I know it seems Emma Stone is Fan-Cast for everything, but I really believe she could pull of the rich girl. Stone would have great on-screen chemistry with Josh Hutcherson, something that Molly Ringwald and Emilio Estevez had plenty of in the original. Emma Stone is really up there in terms of top tier young actors in Hollywood today, and she really can do it all. Emma Stone would be great in the role of Claire, her acting ability is amazing and I have complete faith in her!
Brian Johnson - The Nerd
Michael Cera may be a bit old to play a high school kid, but he definitely could still pull it off. Anthony Michael Hall was the nerd that connected with so many people who grew up a nerd and faced the social problems that came with it. Michel Cera is really one of the nerdiest actors there is today and he does not shy away from awkwardness. Michael Cera has tremendous acting ability, with probably his best performance being his role in Juno where he was really able to exhibit his range as an actor. Cera would definitely be my choice for Brian in a re-make.
John Bender - The Stoner
Of all the members of the Breakfast Club, John Bender was always my favorite. Judd Nelsons performance was one that I have always remembered and is one of my all time favorites. This generation's typical stoner kid actor has to be Dave Franco. One of the brightest young talents in Hollywood, Dave has exhibited his tremendous abilities time and time again. I would trust in his ability to take on the role of John Bender and excel. Judd Nelson's performance will never be topped, but Dave Franco's may be the next best thing and perfect for this generation's Bender.
Allison Reynolds - The Basket Case
Chloë Grace Moretz is my personal favorite in terms of young actresses. Since her breakout performance in Kick-Ass, every film she's put out has continued to improve her acting ability. She naturally has that damaged-girl type of vibe, so filling the role of Allison should come naturally to her. Of all the characters in the Breakfast Club, Allison was the one I didn't make a real connection with. That doesn't take away from Ally Sheedy's performance because it was outstanding, it was just hard to make a personal connection to her. Chloë Moretz could really bring that magic on screen again, I'm confident in that.
Richard "Dick" Vernon - The Assistant Principle
Paul Gleason's performance as Assistant Principal Vernon will forever go down as one of the greatest ever. He gave us such a true sense of a disgruntled faculty member that is clearly unsatisfied with how his life turned out. I can't think of one other person who could pull it off better than Bryan Cranston. Much like Gleason, Cranston also has one of the all time greatest performances with his character Walter White from Breaking Bad. Much like Vernon, Walter White, or "Heisenberg," was clearly unsatisfied with how his life'd turned out. Bryan Cranston would really be able to bring that to the big screen, much like Gleason did. Cranston is the only one I can think of that could come close to Gleason's excellence.
Extra: Carl Reed - The Janitor
Yes! Even Carl The Janitor comes back for the remake! Carl was also Brian's dad and stumbles in on the library where his son is serving his detention. Carl was a dork, but he was a real scumbag kind of dork, admitting that he goes through student's lockers and reads their letters. He had this charm about him that made him a fan favorite. Bob Saget, I believe, could step into that role with success. Bob Saget is a really dorky guy, but he is so sarcastic and can really be just a jerk. I have always been a fan of Bob Saget, ever since Full House I have loved his work. I think Bob Saget could give us a very similar performance to John Kapelos. The Breakfast Club would not have been the same without Carl, and he would be much needed in a remake.
I hope you enjoyed this fan cast as much as I enjoyed writing it! If you agree or have any ideas, let me know down below in the comments!
