A24 has been on a roll lately especially after their success with Ex-machina which starred Alicia Vikander,Oscar Issac, and Domhnall Gleeson which was considered to be one of the best films of 2015 based on word of mouth from critics and fans alike. Now Charlize theron has established ties with the film studio since she will be starring in Dark places, which is an adaptation of the novel by the same name. A24 has already built up their brand and working with Theron is definitely going to grow that brand as more top-tier/ up and coming actors line up to star in their film productions.

Here's the plot synopsis:

Set in a farming town in Kansas, Dark Places follows Libby Day (Charlize Theron), the only surviving witness of a horrific massacre that took her mother and sisters. Believing the slaughter to be the work of a Satanic cult, Libby testifies in court against her own brother. Twenty-five years after the murder, she remains haunted by the gruesome violence of her past when she meets a group of amateur investigators who call themselves "The Kill Club". Looking to satisfy their morbid curiosity, the group begins their own inquiry about the case, believing Libby's brother is innocent. In order to help them, Libby must unearth painful memories of the event and learn that her past may not be what it seems.

The plot sounds functional, but what really stands out is the mentioning of a satanic cult which already says alot about how this film will approach its subject matter and the kind of audience that it might attract. We have seen depictions of cults in film and television for years so it will be interesting to see how this film plays with the formula. Theron will no doubt deliver another great performance as her character tries to recall suppressed memories about a brutal mass murder. Movie-goers will have a fun time trying to piece together important plot twists and developments.

This film might clean-up well at the box office since it has a considerable amount of star power in its ensemble which includes Nicholas Hoult and Chloe Moretz. Dark places will be competing with the Fantastic four reboot, Ricki and the flash, and The Gift which could give the film a run for its money but it's unlikely. A24 is the real winner here since they are slowly improving their reputation as a film distributor and could possibly become a major contender in the film market-place.

Dark places arrives in theaters on August 7, 2015
