I grew up watching cartoons; I could sit in front of my television for hours and I would always refuse to watch anything with real people on the screen.
Thirteen years later I've since graduated to shows featuring real people. I recently sat down with my younger siblings to watch the same shows I would watch when I was their age and I realized that maybe those shows weren't made to be watched by kids. They didn't see anything wrong with it, of course, just like I didn't throughout my childhood.
What I mean is, once you grow older and know more about what the "real world" is like, the more details you start to notice in certain cartoons. And that's when you realize that some kid shows, and movies, are just completely messed up.
Let's take a look at a few:
Alice in Wonderland (1951)
If you haven't seen this movie you're really missing something. This movie includes all kinds of hallucinations, drugs, and all involving a young girl who was just following a bunny. Let's not forget about that stoned caterpillar or that song of the Walrus and the Carpenter.
SpongeBob SquarePants (1999)
This show has been on since 1999, and, when compared to other cartoons in this list, it's really not the worst. But every now and then, you'll find yourself watching an episode featuring an exceedingly odd premise such as SpongeBob shaving his head (top part of his body?) in order to fit in his Halloween costume or that time Squidward got really sad.
I love this show and it never fails to make me laugh, although I must admit that I started getting more jokes as I grew up.
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (2015)
I figured that once we were on the SpongeBob topic, I might as well mention that this movie is probably one of the trippiest children's movies I've ever seen. I mean, that time travel scene just really messed me up.
Adventure time (2010)
This one is relatively a recent TV show that I didn't have the chance to see when I was younger. I've recently watched a few episodes with my family and let's just say that the only ones who find it funny is anyone above the age of fifteen.
The show revolves around Jake the dog (and also a kind of shapeshifter?), Finn the human, and their friends. With all the different creatures and variations of animals in the show, I wouldn't be surprised if they shared illustrators with Alice In Wonderland.
Cow & Chicken (1997)
This show made me incredibly uncomfortable. I don't know what it was; the fact that the cow and chicken are supposed to be siblings and have human parents (who, may I add, write with their feet!), or that it stars a devil and he's always butt naked, but something about this show always weirded me out
Courage The Cowardly Dog (1999)
So yeah, maybe kids should just stick to riding bikes and playing outside if they want to keep their innocence for a few more years.
What kind of movies or shows freaked you out as a kid?
