Fans of Psychological Horror thrillers are in for a treat when "The Gift" arrives in theaters. The film marks the directorial debut of Joel Edgerton who will be starring in the film along with Rebecca Hall and Jason Bateman who will be playing a married couple. Since this is Edgerton's feature it will be a critical moment in his career where he will try to establish himself as a director in addition to already being an actor, producer, and screenwriter. If all goes well then we can expect to hear about his other projects in the future.
Here's the plot synopsis:
Simon and Robyn are a young married couple whose life is going just as planned until a chance encounter with an acquaintance of Simon’s from high school sends their world into a tailspin. Simon doesn’t recognize Gordo at first, but after a series of uninvited encounters and mysterious gifts prove troubling, a terrible secret from their past is uncovered. As Robyn learns the truth about what happened between Simon and Gordo, she begins questioning how well she really knows her husband.
The plot definitely leaves alot to the imagination since you still get to watch the film and slowly begin putting two and two together about the connection between Bateman's and Edgerton's characters. The wife of Bateman's character will try dig into their shared past which could foreshadow that she will either die or she will end up leaving Bateman's character. Gordo and Simon could have been schoolmates, and between the two Simon was the charming popular kid while Gordo was the geeky loner who tried to become friends with Simon. It's also possible that Simon used to bully Gordo. Then of course there is a possibility that Simon did something bad that only Gordo knows about and is using that information to blackmail and Manipulate Simon.
The film has definitely been receiving attention since the cast is so different. Bateman doing a film of this nature will be a enough to get fans to check it out since he is usually branded as a comedic actor. Even though this film looks interesting it will still have heavy competition at the box office since it will be going up against the Fantastic Four reboot which despite the controversy could rake in alot of money for its respective studio. The trailer has been the key to building hype about this film and if you haven't seen it then you could choose not to watch it and make the film more exciting for yourself since you will be able to do the heavy-lifting and critical thinking during the movie. Overall this could be a small but significant victory for Edgerton and STX entertainment.
