We've all heard of the folklore behind cryptids like Bigfoot and Chupacabra, but there are plenty of other unexplained creatures that are potentially lurking in a wilderness near you.

Below are five lesser known cryptids that only a serious enthusiast would have heard of, but nobody in their right mind would want to bump into on a dark night.

5. The Enfield Horror

Habitat: Enfield, Illinois

First sighting: 1973

Biological Class: Possible mammal

Why it's so scary: With a reported superhuman ability to jump huge distances and a record of the creature leaving deep six-toed claw marks on a house, The Enfield Horror really lives up to its name.

If that's not enough, the eyewitness description of the beast is just as chilling, it reads:

It had three legs on it, a short body, two little short arms, and two pink eyes as big as flashlights. It stood four-and-a-half-feet tall and was grayish-colored. It was trying to get into the house!

4. The Flatwoods Monster

Habitat: Braxton County, West Virginia

First sighting: 1952

Biological class: Possible extraterrestrial

Why it's so scary: Hideous hissing, an unexplained "sickening" metallic stench and a height of 10-foot puts The Flatwood Monster firmly in terrifying territory.

3. Loveland Frog

Habitat: Loveland, Ohio

First spotted: 1955

Biological class: Amphibian

Why it's so scary: Although no threatening behavior has been reported from the Loveland Frog, the visual description of the beast is pretty vile, it reads:

The creature was three to four feet tall, 50 to 75 pounds, leathery skin, possibly wet - matted hair on its body that made it look textured, possible tail, a head and face like a frog or lizard, and could leap over the roads' guard rail.

2. Beast of Bray Road

Habitat: Elkhorn, Wisconsin

First spotted: Late 1980s

Biological class: Mammal

Why it's so scary: You've heard of werewolves, right?

1. Ningen

Habitat: The Pacific Ocean

First spotted: 1990

Biological class: Possible marine mammal

Why it's so scary: The Ningen's sheer size and slightly humanoid features make it a chilling unknown. Descriptions of the creature, who has ben spotted by Japanese fishermen, reads:

It is a humongous, “blubbery, whale-like creature,” whose smooth, pale form vaguely resembles the head, torso and appendages of a human being. Many observers have also reported that these animals have no distinct facial features save for two, huge eyes and a mouth-like slit
