Everyone has a favorite sitcom. Sitcoms have become a staple for American television and it seems as if every family has one that they share together. Today's youth have sitcoms like Big Bang Theory and Modern Family to call their own but I grew up with shows very different. I have so many memories of watching some of my favorite shows with my family when I was younger and I continue to watch these shows today. Like I said, everyone has a favorite sitcom and here are mine:
Yes, my favorite shows may be well before my time but my family constantly watched re-runs on tv every night. Roseanne is one of those shows that I have always remembered. Roseanne connected to me in a very personal way because the Connors reminded me so much of my family. I always connected to D.J more than any of the other characters. Being the only boy out of 5 kids growing up, I looked up to my sisters husbands as my brotherly figures. D.J had very strong brotherly connections to Mark and David, his eventual brothers-in-law. Roseanne really felt like it featured a very authentic American family and that is what made the show great to me.
Friends was always that show that I never really watched with my parents. I remember always catching episodes when I would spend summers with my sisters and I instantly became a fan. Despite being a network sitcom, Friends was really geared towards a more adult audience. It always made me feel a bit grown up to watch Friends. It really was my first introduction into the more adult side of television and film. My mother also had a strong connection to Friends, in fact I was actually almost named Chandler at birth. Coincidentally my family compares me to Chandler and express our similarities constantly. Friends will always have the memories to go along with it and I could watch it any day of the week.
1. Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
Without a doubt, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air will always be one of the greatest shows of all time. I remember tuning into Tbs every night just to catch an episode. This was my family's show and we still watch it every now and then. The Carlton dance was a constant joke among me and my siblings and I still have memories of re-creating the dance in my living room. Will Smith was probably the coolest guy on television at the time. Will was basically the Fonz of my generation and that legacy will live on forever.
There are a lot of shows that are great but just didn't make the list. Everybody Loves Raymond and King of Queens where two shows that came close to making the list. That 70's Show is another one that I had memories of watching as a family, I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. Most people put Seinfeld at the top of their list but I honestly was never a big fan myself. Everybody has a favorite sitcom and they are all great!
