Great news for hip-hop fans everywhere: N.W.A., the legendary group that helped make the genre what it is today, are reuniting for a tour in support of their soon-to-be-released biopic. According to a cover story in the upcoming issue of the Hollywood Reporter, the remaining members—Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, DJ Yella, and MC Ren—are set to hit the road in Europe to help promote Straight Outta Compton, the film that centers around their lives. Eminem is set to join them, filling in for Eazy-E, who passed away twenty years ago.
Details about the tour are still sparse, but according to Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley, “We don’t have anything settled yet with everyone’s schedules, but we think it can create a lot of buzz.” Three of the living members reunited for the first time in twenty six years a few months ago for a BET event, but Dr. Dre did not participate. Since Dre did take part in the interview and cover shoot, it appears he’s ready to get back on stage with his former bandmates.
Eminem is a good fit for the tour, as he has been a protege of Dr. Dre for a long time, and the two have worked together for decades. In addition to his relationship with the former Beats owner, Eminem is also featured on the film’s soundtrack, along with other contemporary hip-hop stars like Kendrick Lamar. Dre will also appear on the soundtrack, which marks a somewhat-rare return to recording music. He hasn’t released an album since 1999’s 2001, though he has charted successful singles over the past decade or so.
Straight Outta Compton is set to hit theaters on August 14th, and anticipation is high. The film follows the incredible rise to fame that N.W.A. enjoyed in the late 80’s and early 90’s, and the creation of the music that made them one of the most successful and revered groups in the genre’s history. So far, there has been some controversy around the picture, including a murder on set of a shoot for promotional materials. Fellow rapper Suge Knight is currently being charged for the crime.
