AMC is getting in with the DC comics game. They are making a TV show adaption of their popular comic, Preacher. The comic is popular, but not the most famous or well known. I certainly never read the comics. So, I did some research about the comics and the show. So....
Here is everything we know about Preacher.
Jesse Custer: Played by Dominic Cooper, Custer is a small-town preacher in Annville. He has a pass that is sometimes really dark and twisted. One day, he finds himself with a very powerful gift: the Word of God. He quite literally can tell someone to do something and they will do it. Custer also tends to have a crazy chivalrous streak and an iron will. Cooper, for his part, will have to turn in an performance that is much more stoic and less charismatic.
Tulip O'Hara: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D fans will recognize Ruth Negga as the inhuman Rania. Here, she will play Tulip, the resourceful, force of nature ex-girlfriend of Custer. She often finds herself conflicted between her feelings for Custer and his need to protect her even when she doesn't need it. Negga was the first person to be cast.
Cassidy: A hard-drinking, hard-party Irish vampire. (Yep. Vampire.) Cassidy, portrayed by Joseph Gilgun, is a trainwreck that joins Tulip and Jesse on their search for God. He can also be quite charming if he wants to be.
Arseface: Real name Eugene Root, a teenager who, after being completely obsessed with Kurt Cobain, tries and fails to copy Cobain's suicide. And he fails in such a huge why that, in the process, he blows off half his face with a shotgun. Arseface is played by Ian Colletti. Colletti will probably be in a lot of make-up, as Arseface is left witha gaping hole where his mouth was.
Fiore: Game of Thrones' Tom Brooke will play an angel. Fiore is one of two angels sent from Heaven to catch the Genesis entity that gives Jesse his power. He seems like he might be a bit of a villain.
Arseface father, Hugo Root, has been cast. W. Earl Brown (Deadwood) will take on the role. Elizabeth Perkins ha been cast as a new character, Vyla Quinncannon. Vyla is a businesswoman who runs a local slaughterhouse and has ties the Jesse's father. This might be a gender-swapped version of the nasty Odin Quinncannon. Lucy Griffiths was also cast as an original character, Emily. She is a church organist and is Jesse's right hand in Annville. Jamie Anne Allman and Derek Wilson also joined as Betsy and Donny Schenck.
Here's the official synopsis for the show:
Preacher is based on the Vertigo comic of the same name, which follows Jesse Custer, a Texas preacher who was given the ability to control others, after he came into contact with Genesis, a creature spawned by an angel and a demon. Traveling across country, Jesse teamed with his tough girlfriend Tulip and an Irish vampire named Cassidy in an adventure to take down god.
When it will air and other details
AMC hasn't greenlit this as a series as they only ordered a pilot. But the pilot was written by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin. Rogen and Goldberg are directing. Rogen has been trying to get this adapted for a while.
And outside of the year 2016, we don't know when this will air. When it gets closer, I will have to revisit this.
