Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy was a tremendous success when it hit theaters and Blu-Ray. And with the sequel to the movie still a great deal of time away, not coming out til May 2017, fans have been hankering for something to hold them over. Well, today is going to be a good day for you then, as something new is on the horizon and coming fast!

Guardians of the Galaxy Animated Series

The House of Ideas has finally announced a Guardians of the Galaxy Animated Series debuting this fall on Disney XD, and now the first official trailer for the show has been released. Check it out below!

Cinema Blend describes this first promo perfectly

While the promo is brief, it does give a good idea of what the series will be offering: a fun tone and plenty of action. Much of the latter will no doubt come from their weapons enthusiast Rocket, voiced by Trevor Devall, whose suggestion for the team’s battle cry is “Let’s blow stuff up!” Also included in the trailer is an action shot of Kevin Michael Richardson’s Groot, a snippet of Will Friedle’s Star-Lord voice, and quick looks at Gamora. Oddly enough, Drax is nowhere to be seen. In the coming weeks, hopefully Marvel will release a longer trailer to give fans young and old a better idea of what to expect.

But Wait...There's More!

While above is the first official trailer for the upcoming animated series fans have been waiting for, Marvel did actually unveil some test-footage at the NYCC Comic-Con, show below.

The Plot

According to cinemablend, the plot will be something along these lines.

When the Guardians of the Galaxy animated series kicks off, its protagonists will discover an artifact keyed to Star-Lord’s DNA that reveals a treasure map. Learning that the prize at the end of the journey is the Cosmic Seed, the band of rogues sets off the find the Seed and destroy it so its power can’t be used for sinister purposes. Along the way, they will run into characters from Marvel’s cosmic universe, like Thanos, Loki, The Collector and even Cosmo the Space Dog.

Pretty exciting stuff if I do say so myself! But now to answer the biggest question of all:

Will It Be Tied To The Marvel Cinematic Universe

No, sadly, it will not. While the animated series will follow the events of the first Guardians of the Galaxy film, director James Gunn has said

Although the animated series is intended to follow the events of 'Guardians of the Galaxy', it isn't part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so don't expect any of the events in the series to be referenced in Guardians 2.

When Can We Expect To See It?

You can catch a sneak peek of the Guardians of the Galaxy animated series on Disney XD Saturday September 5 at 9 p.m. EST, followed by the premiere on Saturday, September 26 at 9:30 p.m. EST. Fans can also look forward to other multi-platform content being released this August.
