The world is coming to an end. The final incursion has happened and the 616 Universe is on a collision course with the Ultimate universe. The heroes of Earth knows that there is no surviving the collision of these two worlds. But, all it takes is a villain who has nothing left in him to save the planet. But, in order to do that he will need power. Power from a monster like the Sugar Man and power from his own allies and family. This is the final story of Magneto and how he plans to save the planet at the cost of both his body and his soul.
Bunn has done an incredible job in the last few months of taking us deep in the soul of Magneto. The flashbacks to the past show us so much of why he is the man that he is today. Sure, we all know that Magneto has an ego. If anyone is going to be the hero of this story, it needs to be him. But, Bunn also shows us that no matter how many time we feel he has changed, he is still the same man that we know and remember. He displayed that last month when he slaughtered the Sugar Man after he helped him. This month, it is when Magneto does the ultimate treachery to try and save a doomed world. What makes this story so great is we know the outcome. We know that Magneto will fail and the planet will be destroyed. But, getting to that point and showing how far Magneto will go to save the planet that is filled with people who despise him and everything he stands for is what makes this comic series so fantastic. In addition, even with the destruction all around us, Bunn found a way to address a number of storylines that need conclusions since next issue is the final issue of the series. Great writing and some incredible art again make Cullen Bunn's Magneto series one of the rare books in current years to examine who Magneto is now and why he keeps doing what he's doing. I give this issue a 8 out of 10.
