Batman is thought to be able to accomplish any obstacle he faces and justify it with three words: "Because I'm Batman!" And this had led to generations of stubborn Batman fans and comic book newcomers to think that Batman is an unstoppable force for good and that he is prepared for any outcome. Wrong! Today I'll be debunking 3 popular Batman "facts" created by Batman fans. Let's begin.

1.) Batman can beat Superman

One of the most argued comic book fights: Can Batman beat Superman? The simple answer, no. To justify my answer I'll primarily look at two famous Batman versus Superman comic books, Batman: Hush and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.

BATMAN: HUSH

In the Batman: Hush comic book, Superman is brainwashed by Poison Ivy and attacks Batman. But Batman has a kryptonite ring and with that he hurls himself at Superman. This is where Batman fans say that Batman is wiping the floor with Superman. Wrong! What Batman fans forget to mention are Batman's internal dialogues throughout the fight:

In the end Batman gets Catwoman to throw Lois Lane out of a window to snap Superman completely out of Poison Ivy's control. So Batman didn't actually beat Superman at all. In fact if Batman hadn't ended the fight, he probably would have eventually been killed. Moving on.

BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS

Ninety-nine percent of "Can Batman beat Superman" arguments involve TDKR. To many Batman fans this was a win for Batman. Wrong! Watch and learn:

So Batman got Green Arrow to shoot a kryptonite arrow at Superman, which temporarily knocked him down. When Superman recovered and got ready for another round, Batman faked a heart attack to escape. Let me ask, how the HELL does Batman win this one?! HOW?!?! And the answer is, he doesn't. Also, remember, Superman had just been nuked. Look at this internal dialogue in the comic book format:

So Batman was counting on outside help the whole time. Bottom line: Batman cannot beat Superman in a one-on-one confrontation (if it wasn't one-on-one then technically Batman isn't fighting Superman). Here are some other times where Batman has easily lost against Superman:

Superman critically injures Batman.
Superman critically injures Batman.
Superman critically injures Batman.
Superman critically injures Batman.
Superman blows kryptonite from Batman's hand.
Superman blows kryptonite from Batman's hand.
Superman blows kryptonite from Batman's hand.
Superman blows kryptonite from Batman's hand.
Superman cripples Batman.
Superman cripples Batman.

There you have it, Batman cannot beat Superman, even with prep time and kryptonite. Batman always relies on Superman to hold back, and even when he does, he can't defeat him. Superman is always just one move away from defeating Batman. But that doesn't mean Superman is unstoppable, just read my 10 DC Superheroes that can defeat Superman list. Now we know Batman can't beat Superman, but we also know that just because he has prep time, doesn't mean he can suddenly beat anyone.

2.) Batman is always focused and prepared

You can never be prepared for everything, but over the years Batman fans have said Batman is always ready. Wrong! Yes he has contingency plans for most things, but no where near all of them. Read this panel from the Forever Evil storyline:

Luthor tricks Batman into giving him kryptonite.
Luthor tricks Batman into giving him kryptonite.

I mean wasn't he suspicious that a supervillain wants to shake hands with him? A supervillain who has a history of manipulating people. The worst part is, Batman has been tricked by people worse than Luthor...

The Joker tricks Batman into a trap...again.
The Joker tricks Batman into a trap...again.

I lost count of how many times Batman has fallen into traps laid by people such as the Joker or the Riddler. I wish I could show more examples, but I cannot find the pictures. Such examples would be, the many times he did something that caused the Joker to escape (in The Death of the Family storyline Batman is at one point paralysed by the Joker and is thrown off a bridge. If it wasn't for the Bat-family, Batman would have drowned). Bottom line: Batman is not ready for everything and is easier to trick than you may think.

3.) Batman is an one man army

How did this rumour start? I honestly don't know. Maybe because he wages war on Gotham and therefore has probably fought every criminal in Gotham. However it started, Batman fans seem to think that Batman is capable of taking on anyone and everything by himself. I know this sounds like the first one, but it isn't. First of all, Batman isn't the only one protecting Gotham, that's why there is a Bat-family. And sometimes the Bat-family ends up saving Batman rather than Gotham. Just read the Court of Owls or the Death of Family comic books and you'll see how dependent Batman is on his colleagues. But what Batman fans mean by him being an "one man army" is that, he can defeat anyone. I recently read a message board where people were arguing if Batman could beat Darkseid. He sure as hell cannot! I mean whenever the rest of the Justice League gets taken down, Batman fans expect Batman to finish off the villain. These thoughts probably sprang from reading Grant Morrison's JLA Volume 1, where the rest of the Justice League gets defeated but Batman finds out the enemies's secret and takes them out. But that doesn't mean suddenly Batman is the Justice League's most valuable member. Just look at another time that kind of situation happened:

This is where Batman fans get hyped and think Batman is going to put her on her ass. Wrong!

Also in Grant Morrison's JLA Volume 2 we see Batman get the snot beaten out of him by Prometheus. But not only do Batman fans think Batman can defeat anyone with enough prep time (we've already established that he can't) they believe that Batman can do anything. This time they have plenty of justifications (Batman survived in space for 20+ seconds, he dug himself out of a buried coffin, while being exposed to a new Joker toxin etc.) But of course, he can't. Here are some things the current Batman can't do:

Batman now can't be a Green Lantern
Batman now can't be a Green Lantern
Batman's can't dodge simple attacks.
Batman's can't dodge simple attacks.

After all the years of fighting the Joker...he really didn't see that coming?

BEWARE: THESE NEXT PANELS WILL EXPOSE BATMAN LIKE NEVER BEFORE...AND TRUTH BE TOLD, ITS UGLY.

Batman loses his power of intimidation.
Batman loses his power of intimidation.

What Captain Cold says is true, Batman's bark is far worse than his bite. If it were Superman in Batman's position, no one would be questioning him because people know he can bite as loud as he can bark. Batman just doesn't have that...and he never did to start with. These next panels are even more sad...

Ouch. That must of seriously hurt his pride. But its the ugly truth everyone. I just want to say, I didn't want to do this and I personally love Batman comic books, but all you Batman fans have to stop going on every article or message board and saying stuff like, "Batman can beat him/her/it or do this/that because he's Batman." Just no. The reason he is so popular is because he is relatable and the most realistic superhero out there. The exact opposite of Superman. He is a man finding his place in a world full of gods. At the end of the day, he is a man and every man has his limits. Even a Batman.

I know there will be tons of Batman fans that will hate on my article and try to find holes in my theories. But the thing is, these aren't theories. These are from comic books and they are the source of these characters. If you argue against it then you are trying to change the character. But comic books contradict each other all the time so it doesn't really matter if right now Batman can't use a Green Lantern ring, or if he can't be prepared for everything, because there will come a day when Batman will change once more and when that day comes, this article will be meaningless. So in a way, all you Batman fans win as well.
