One of the most fascinating aspects of the original Assassin's Creed games, aside from the revolutionary gameplay that Ubisoft introduced, was how the story connected with that of Altair, Ezio and Desmond Miles. The conclusion to the first game in the series had a remarkably difficult cliffhanger to deal with. One of the defining reasons I was so excited for Assassin's Creed 2 was to see how Ubisoft were planning on wrapping up the questions they left open at the end.

However, after stretching out Desmond Miles' story in strange ways, and refusing to give us more concrete information, my eagerness to uncover the truth dwindled with every installment. And yet, I still loved the connection that Assassin's Creed had with modern day. It helped inform the past and give you something to look forward to once a few missions were completed. Should Ubisoft start bringing this back in Assassin's Creed: Syndicate?

Assassin's Creed Syndicate - Should Ubisoft Bring Back A Modern Day Protagonist?

In a recent discussion on Reddit, in which AC fans discussed what they missed most about the series, I was surprised to learn that a number of people shared my opinion. A lot of gamers miss the connections that Ubisoft wove between the past and the future. The two landscapes were fascinating and we couldn't wait to break out into the modern world as Desmond. Unfortunately, that never came to pass but I do miss this dynamic.

The fact that the developers dropped this storyline goes to show how they couldn't create a narrative that worked anymore for the future. They wanted to explore too many centuries and cities (or just make more money) for them to keep an intriguing narrative thread running alongside the move to all of these places. It's frustrating I'm sure, but the series has lost one of its defining features and I think it's suffering from it.

None of the Assassin's Creed games feel connected to one another anymore, and that's a real issue. There's no character we want to return to in the games, there are no plot lines that we're dying to uncover. Its lost some of its mystery and I think that Ubisoft really need to start bringing it back. A modern protagonist added a dynamic to the past that at the very least offered another location for gamers to explore and find interesting.

Without it, Ubisoft have lost a lot of interested fans. The Assassin's Creed franchise has had far too many installments for me to care anymore. However, if they were to bring back modern day in a big way, Assassin's Creed: Syndicate could really benefit in the narrative department. But what do you think?
