Michael Jackson is known as the king of pop. He changed the way that we looked at music and is one of the most iconic singers of all time. He is most known for his voice, but he also had a brief acting career. And he had his heart set on playing one character from the Star Wars prequels. And that character was Jar Jar Binks.
Vice was able to catch up with Ahmed Best, the voice of Jar Jar, and questioned him about the idea of Michael Jackson playing the part instead of him, wondering if it was a joke or not. Best told them that it was not a joke, and that Lucas had told him this himself. Best remembers being backstage with Natalie Portman, Lucas, and his kids at a Michael Jackson concert. Best said:
"George introduced me as "Jar Jar" and I was like, that's kind of weird. Michael was like, "Oh, OK." I thought, what was going on? After Michael had driven off, we all go back up to a big afterparty. I'm having a drink with George and I say, "Why did you introduce me as Jar Jar?" He said, "Well, Michael wanted to do the part but he wanted to do it in prosthetics and makeup like 'Thriller.'" George wanted to do it in CGI"
We know there are fans of the Star Wars prequels out there, but after the release of The Phantom Menace, Jar Jar quickly became one of the most hated movie characters of all time. People talked about how annoying and obnoxious he was, and how he was pretty much useless to the story line.
One problem with the prequels is that they use way to much green screen and less real effects. And the use of makeup and prosthetics for Jar Jar would definitely be a step in the right direction. But we will never really know how well Michael Jackson would have done as Jar Jar Binks. I am sure that he would have made the movie bigger than the movie would have been in the first place.
