For the past month now, a rumor has been circling that Marvel has offered Rachel McAdams the lead female role in their most mystical movie yet, Doctor Strange. However, Marvel in their usual manner kept very tight-lipped neither confirming or denying anything.
Even McAdams wasn't very forthcoming about the subject when she spoke to Den of Geek:
“I don’t have much to say about it right now. There’s not really anything to comment on. But, if there is, I’ll let you know.”
So unfortunately for almost a month now we've been left in the dark about the truth of the matter.
Until now that is!
While talking to The Los Angeles Times about her career, McAdams divulged some interesting information on the current situation with Marvel:
“It’s still super-early days, and I don’t know where that’s gonna go, if it’s gonna go anywhere at all.”
So the good news...
Rachel McAdams is 100% in talks with Marvel!!
But the bad news...
She's far from signed on for it
With any luck Marvel can sign her on for Doctor Strange, giving us a strong female character which the MCU is seriously lacking right now. However this isn't her first time being offered a role in a Marvel movie as she was Jon Favreau’s first choice to play Pepper Potts in Iron Man all the way back in 2008. Hopefully that won't be a recurring pattern!
It's obvious that she picks her roles with caution and that has stood her in good stead so far in her career. With stellar performances ranging from her romantic role in the movie 'The Notebook' to her more hardened, edgy character in the series 'True Detective', its clear she could more than likely handle anything Doctor Strange throws at her acting-wise.
But who will she play?
There has been no conformation on the role that McAdams has been offered to portray as of yet as Marvel still refuse to drop the ball. Although seeing as she's been offered the lead female role in the movie there's only one woman it could possibly be if you ask me...
Clea is actually the niece of the Strange's mortal enemy, Dormammu and the daughter of Dormammu's equally evil sister Umar. Clea observes Strange at first from the Dark Dimension and admires his courage. When Strange goes to face Dormammu she warns him of the danger thus saving his life. Dormammu punishes her for her betrayal but eventually Strange finds and rescues her from the demonic tyrant. Clea becomes Strange's disciple and eventually both become lovers.
Having such a strong female love interest/superhero in Doctor Strange could be a breath of fresh air in the MCU instead of the generic 'damsel in distress' girlfriend *cough* Jane Foster. Also with an already stellar cast, having a determined, capable actress like McAdams behind Clea could drive the movie to major success.
Unfortunately we will have to wait and see if McAdams does accept the role or not, but until then, what do you think?
