I am a mega fan boy of Doctor Who, and ever since the first series 9 trailer surfaced a few weeks ago, there have been many speculations of who could Maisie Williams be playing. Maisie will be in the episodes titled ‘The Girl Who Died’ and ‘The Woman Who Lived.’
If you have not seen the trailer then I would suggest watching it before reading this article.
I am going to talk about all of the theories regarding her character and then I’m going to give my thoughts of the character that she could be playing. I will be explaining these theories and de-bunking them using information that I have gathered.
1. A young Clara Oswald
I’ve heard many speculations of Maisie Williams playing a younger version of Clara; if this is true then I’m guessing they travel back in time with her because from what we can see of what she’s wearing, it seems that it is clothes of a different era.
Now I personally dislike this theory because in series 7, we see flashbacks of a younger Clara, so what is the point of having a big actress playing a character that we have already seen, and as the attitude of Maisie in the trailer, she seems a little too cocky to be playing Clara.
2. The Nightmare Child
I have seen a theory that Maisie could be playing the Nightmare Child, this name has been dropped through the years and could be true due to the fact that the Doctor tampered with Gallifrey and accidentally unleashed the Nightmare Child.
I don’t see any problem with this theory but it is quite unlikely that something like that wouldn’t just kill the Doctor on the spot if they ever meet, this would be a cool thing to happen as we haven’t seen many enemies from Gallifrey in the modern series.
3. Young Missy
This theory would be good, it could reveal how Missy became so powerful, and how she got her hands on the devices the used throughout series 8.
My only problem with this theory is that I doubt they’d concentrate on Missy for another series, if you have not heard, then Michelle Gomez will be returning in the first two episodes of series 9, they’ll be titled ‘The Magician’s Apprentice’ and ‘The Witches Familiar.’ If they were to reveal the story of Missy then they would be better off doing it in the first two episodes rather than in a future episode.
4. Susan Foreman
This is probably the biggest theory circulating Maisie Williams’ character, could she be playing Susan? Peter Capaldi has stated that he would like to see Susan return with his incarnation of the Doctor, and to be honest with you, I wouldn’t mind seeing Susan return.
There is one problem that I have with this theory, why would they bring his grand daughter back for only two episodes? Why bring her back after god knows how many years only to have her in two episodes? Unless they were planning something else with Susan, perhaps ending the episode with Susan being killed? Perhaps getting another actress to portray her through the rest of the series? I don’t think so.
5. River Song
Here is another theory that I have heard about the character that Maisie is playing, apparently the Doctor could bend the rules of time and space or something like that and revive her, or just bring on another incarnation of her.
I have one big problem with this theory, River Song is meant to be gone for good, and she died in series 4, came back in series 5, once again in series 6 and finally ended in series 7. I was a huge fan of River but I’d like to see her stick with Matt Smith rather than Peter Capaldi, only because I thought their characters suited each other more than Peter Capaldi’ Doctor would.
6. Donna Noble
Christ, who writes this rubbish? There is a weird theory that Maisie is playing the series 4 companion, this is something that I’d hate to happen.
One, it would undo one of the show’s biggest emotional part, and how on Earth would she be able to track down the Doctor after he wiped her memory? This theory is as I say ‘Popadox.’
Yes, that’s right, someone though that Maisie could be playing Jenny, the Doctor’s daughter, yes that’s right, the one that died at the end and then regenerated at the end of the episode and stole a spaceship.
Now, personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing this as I think Maisie is someone who could be suited with a grumpy old man and play the father and daughter act on screen together, but once again, why would you bring an old character back for only two episodes?
8. The Lady
The Lady is a character that some might not know, the lady, is the woman who appeared in the final few episodes of David Tennant’s Doctor, she is said to be a powerful lady and even the mother of the Doctor, in case you still don’t know who I’m talking about, she is the woman who spoke to Wilfred, and normally had her hands covering her face towards the end of the final episode of David Tennant.
Yes, that’s right Loki, not Tom Hiddleston of MARVEL, no. But the Norse Loki, the one who isn’t in the movies, the one that isn’t a loveable character. Now, it has been confirmed that the hair piece of Maisie Williams is a period piece, as the episodes are meant to have Odin in, someone created the theory that Maisie could be playing Loki, don’t get me wrong, but this is the character that Maisie would be great at playing.
I personally don’t see much wrong with this theory and can’t find anything to complain about, so this theory could possibly be true.
10. Someone who is entirely new
This isn’t really a theory, but I couldn’t find any other theories regarding her character, hopefully it will be someone new and witty who can challenge the Doctor and perhaps beat him and help him at the same time.
I do enjoy all of these theories, however, I believe I know what her lines in the trailer are all about.
Maisie is in two episodes, titled ‘The girl who died’ and ‘The woman who lived.’ My idea is that this shot was taken from ‘The woman who lived’ and it is meant to be the Doctor finding out that Maisie’ character is still alive and has been waiting for the Doctor for a long time, as the Doctor is shocked to see her, as he thinks she is dead, but it turns out she isn’t and he has gone back to check on her whereabouts and finds out that she is still alive.
So tell me your favourite theory about Maisie’s character or who you hope she is playing.
I hope you enjoyed this article.
