movies...writing...is there anything else?

In all my years of going to the movies never have a seen a film draw emotion from the audience like this film. People cried (even men), People laughed, and people cheered.
This is NOT a boxing movie. Repeat. This is NOT a boxing movie. It's so much more. Sothpaw tells the story of Billy "The Great" Hope, reigning Junior Middleweight Boxing Champion of the World (Jake Gyllenhaal). Billy Hope seemingly has it all with an impressive career, a beautiful and loving wife (Rachel McAdams), an adorable daughter and a lavish lifestyle. When tragedy strikes and his lifelong manager and friend leaves him behind, Hope hits rock bottom and turns to an unlikely savior at a run-down local gym: Tick Willis (Forest Whitaker), a retired fighter and trainer to the city's toughest amateur boxers. With his future riding on Tick's guidance and tenacity, Billy enters the hardest battle of his life as he struggles with redemption and to win back the trust of those he loves.
Let me start by giving props to director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer) he has come a long way. His run on the indie circuit really helped mold his storytelling ability. Next writer Kurt Sutter (Television's Sons of Anarchy) brings a well rounded and gritty story to the plate. Put these two together and it's pure magic. There styles are compatible on every level. If these two decided to collaborate on more films it could probably save the face of hollywood.
Lastly Jake Gyllenhall...where do i begin...let's just say someone has an Academy Award nomination coming his way. He's been nothing short of impressive with his performances in Prisioners, Enemy, and Nightcrawler, now he's continuing that trend with this. He creates such a character with the way he moves, the way he talks, etc. that you fail to realize that's little Donnie Darko you're watching.

Final Verdict: 9/10
You're money WILL NOT be wasted on this film. You will witness the triumph of the human spirit, shed a tear, laugh, and get goosebumps as you watch a man try to regain everything he's lost.
