In 2013, the minds behind Doctor Who did something unprecedented when they simulcast the premiere of the 50th anniversary episode at the same time all around the world, both on television and in movie theaters. At the time, I was living in Berlin, and as one of the Whovians who made sure to get a ticket to watch it on the big screen, I can attest to the fact that it was an absolutely epic event that brought fans together the world over.
Now, they're looking to recreate that event on a slightly smaller scale with the Dark Water/Death in Heaven in 3D event. To prep for the upcoming ninth season, the special theatrical event will run for two separate nights and show the two-part Season 8 finale: First "Dark Water," then "Death in Heaven" in 3D.
Along with airing the finale to catch fans up (or bring new fans on board), the special event will also feature "The Doctor's Meditation," a prequel scene to the first episode of the ninth season.
Plus, there will be an exclusive interview with the Doctor and Clara themselves, hosted by Wil Wheaton.
The event is being hosted by Fathom Events in partnership with BBC America, and you can get your tickets for it starting Friday, July 31st on Fathom's website or by going to a participating theater's box office. With 700 theaters across the country participating, you're bound to have one in your area.
