When Man of Steel came out we all knew that there would be a sequel. At first director of Man of Steel Zack Snyder stated that there was going to be a direct sequel to MOS. He also said that there would be a new villian in it:

I remember we were talking about, ‘What’s the next villain?’ We can’t do another alien invasion.’ Brainiac was definitely down the road. Metallo, I think, was going to be the main bad guy of this movie.
Metallo was the muted villian in Man of Steel 2.

However, circumstances definitely changed. Man of Steel's sequel was slowly being changed from a Superman solo to a practically a Justice League movie. The first introduction that was announced was that of Batman. Many wondered about how big of a role the Dark Knight would play. It was then apparent that Batman would be one of the main characters.

Ben Affleck will play Batman.

Snyder sat down with Forbes to discuss how the Caped Crusader became such a huge part of the Man Of Steel sequel, suggesting that while Batman was on the table, no one involved were directly planning on going to Gotham. Snyder says that Batman's name was casually floated --

"Maybe at the end of the second movie, some Kryptonite gets delivered to Bruce Wayne’s house or something."

But the wheels quickly turned. He spoke about questioning who Superman should fight next, and how to follow Zod...

The problem is, once you say it out loud, then it’s kind of hard to go back, right? Once you say, "What about Batman?" then you realize, "Okay, that’s a cool idea. What else?" I mean, what do you say after that? …But I’m not gonna say at all that when I took the job to do Man of Steel that I did it in a subversive way to get to Batman. I really believe that only after contemplating who could face [Superman] did Batman come into the picture.

Now I really am not buying this statement that Snyder says. Why change a direct sequel to a team movie but is still classed as a Man of Steel sequel? Apart from Batman's inclusion we also have Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg and Jason Mamoa as Aquaman. You also have Jesse Eissenberg as Lex Luther. Now there is slight confusion as to what this movie is as Slate article states when Eissenberg was announced:

Jesse Eisenberg will play Superman’s arch nemesis Lex Luthor in the sequel to Man of Steel, Warner Bros. announced today.

While the movie is not expected until 2016, Slate has obtained this exclusive clip, originally intended to play after the credits for Man of Steel, that shows the villain’s harrowing origin story.

While Henry Cavill who plays Superman has stated the opposite when he spoke to Entertainment Weekly:

“There’s plenty of time for individual Superman sequels. He’s a tough character to tell. People like the darker vigilante. I think it speaks to the human psyche more easily rather than the god-like being that we can’t really understand. Once we have a more expansive universe we can delve more into the character of Superman and hopefully tell more stories.”

So we now have basically the Justice League in a Man of Steel sequel. But why do I say "Man of Steel sequel?". Because WB could not make up its mind if this is a separate movie or a sequel. As the mixed responses we have been getting it's hardly surprising. Regardless of the messy pre production of the movie. A lot of fans were wondering why all these characters are being rushed in the movie. Well it's simple. WB have pressed the panic button because of MCU. Seeing as Marvel are ahead of WB/DC in their cinematic universe. WB rushed their franchise through the so called Man of Steel sequel.

MCU have done brilliant with their movies. What made them different to WB is that MCU made solo movies first before they made the Avengers. Making a Captain America, Iron Man and Thor movie gave the audience a chance to get to know the character before the ultimate teamup.

MCU have prepared their movie franchise correctly. As evident to the huge success of the Avengers.

Now MCU will have their ace in the pack. They now have the most popular superhero ever in Spiderman in their ranks. With MCU already making a fortune on their own. They will now be certainly unstoppable now with Spiderman. Of course WB will know this and will be looking over their shoulder.

Having Spiderman in the MCU will make them even more popular.

So, Batman v Superman is WB's attempt to close the gap on MCU. It's a good attempt but has a sense of desperation. If WB made a statement from the start that Batman v Superman is a separate movie maybe it would portray confidence in their movie. However, even today you do not know if it's a sequel but if it is....it's insulting to Cavill who thought he was getting his own trilogy. Now he is playing second fiddle to Affleck and Co. Snyder can really say that he "planned" to make this type of movie but it's obvious that WB have called the shots from the start. Man of Steel did not do well in the box office and WB had no faith in making another Superman sequel. So we are getting a congested Justice League movie in only DCU's SECOND movie. Why have a Justice League movie so soon unless WB were concerned? Having Batman,Wonder Woman, Cyborg and Aquaman in this movie without a solo origin story smells of desperation. WB are putting all their hopes and dreams into this ONE movie! If this movie does not surpass the Avengers then WB will be well and truly be playing catchup against MCU for a very long time.
