It's a good time to be a superhero and a woman. Jessica Jones is coming to Netflix, Agent Carter proves time and again why she is Marvel's greatest female hero on ABC, and thanks to frequent Avenger Black Widow, Scarlett Johansson has become the reigning queen of geek.
So Marvel has pretty much got it covered. DC, on the other hand, are a bit behind (nothing new there...). But next year, Wonder Woman will make her debut in Batman vs Superman, before headlining her own movie in 2017. Which means that DC will actually have a female hero movie out before Marvel. Boom.
The actress entrusted with the role of DC's Amazonian superheroine is one Gal Gadot, and seeing as the Israeli actress is still far from a household name, we thought we'd take a look at the seven stops on Gadot's road to Wonder Woman.
1. Gadot was in the Israeli army
Scarlett Johansson and Hayley Atwell might kick ass on-screen, but Gadot's credentials are a whole lot more authentic: she spent two years as a soldier in the Israeli defense forces. Basically, she can kick ass for real.
2. She tried out for the 007 movie Quantum of Solace
Gadot was enrolled at law school when she was invited to audition for the role of Camille Montes, 007's love interest in the James Bond flick Quantum of Solace.
The role went to Olga Kurylenko instead, who's gone on to have a pretty decent career herself, but it's probably Gadot having the last laugh, considering she's about to go toe-to-toe with both Batman and Superman.
Not to mention the fact that Quantum of Solace is a steaming pile of-- (ed - keep it clean, damnit!).
3. Instead, she got her break in Fast & Furious
They say one door closes and another opens, and so it was when Gadot won the part of Gisele in Fast & Furious, the 4th movie in the franchise. In sequel Fast Five, Gisele is revealed to be an excellent driver (prompting Han to remark that he might "be in love" whilst watching her at the wheel - whatever turns you on), which makes sense considering Gadot is a motorbike enthusiast in real life. She owns a Ducati Monster, which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like.
4. She's modeled for Captain Morgan, Jaguar and Gucci, to name just a few
Because when you look like this, it would be absurd not to get paid for it.
Disclaimer: you can buy Gucci Bamboo perfume for your girlfriend, but she will not suddenly look like Gal Gadot. She will just smell like bamboo. Probably best to give that one a miss.
5. She got her revenge on Quantum of Solace star Olga Kurylenko in the end...
...when she beat the French actress for the role of Wonder Woman. Revenge is a dish best served Amazonian, as they say. Elodie Yung was also in contention; she too will be kicking ass in season 2 of Daredevil on Netflix in 2016.
6. Gadot has something to prove in Batman vs Superman
The internet is a judgmental place, and when you take a property like Batman, stir in a dash of Superman and add a touch of Wonder Woman, there are a few million comic fans lining up to share their opinion with the world.
For Gadot, that means a lot of skepticism, and a bunch of questions about whether a model is really an appropriate choice to play DC's most famous female hero.
If the few glimpses of Gadot in action in the trailer are anything to go by, she'll have the internet warriors eating out of her hands come next year. This incarnation of Wonder Woman looks seriously intense - that's practically a suit of armor she's wearing. Superman had better watch his back.
7. Wonder Woman releases 2017
By which time, she'll have achieved what Marvel's Black Widow still hasn't after five outings in the MCU and headlined the first solo female superhero movie since Catwoman (we all know how that turned out). Long story short, Gal Gadot is going to be around for a while, so you'd better get used to her.
